Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am expressing my concern regarding the fitness and sports centre in my city. There are numerous benefits of having such centres.

My family members and I go to the gym every day to achieve our fitness goal. We often use all the equipment there. As fitness centre is not only good for physical health but also for mental well-being.Earlier, there is no fitness centre in my area. So, local people do not have any opportunity to do recreational activities.Owing to this, they had to spent sedentary lifestyle.

However, now they can spend their leisure time in sports and leisure centre which plays an indispensable role to stay healthy. If the centre would be closed then local people will have to face numerous problems . As they will have to suffer from health issues such as obesity.

I would be appreciated it if you could keep open all of these fitness centre in my area.

Thanks for your time and consideration.

Yours sincerely,

Rajvir Kaur.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you describe your family’s daily gym use, explain the centre’s value for recreation and health, and warn that closure could contribute to health problems such as obesity. This meets the task well, and the reference to the lack of local facilities before the centre existed adds relevant context. However, the explanation of community importance and the effects of closure is less fully developed than the account of your own use. For example, you could explain who else relies on the centre or what practical barriers people might face if it closes. The request to the council is clear, but a more specific, persuasive closing appeal would strengthen the letter further.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter follows a generally clear sequence: it introduces your concern, describes your family’s use, discusses community benefits and possible consequences, and ends with a request. This overall arrangement makes the purpose easy to follow. Some links between ideas are mechanical or unclear, however. The transition from “Earlier, there is no fitness centre” to the present situation could be expressed more smoothly, and “If the centre would be closed then…” creates an awkward connection between the condition and its result. The paragraphing is also limited, with several distinct points crowded together. Grouping your personal use, community value, and closure effects into separate paragraphs, and using clearer references to the centre and local residents, would improve progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including relevant expressions such as “mental well-being,” “recreational activities,” “leisure time,” and “indispensable role.” These choices help communicate the centre’s benefits, and the meaning is generally clear. Some phrases are imprecise or do not collocate naturally, such as “achieve my fitness goal,” “spent sedentary lifestyle,” and “keep open all of these fitness centre.” The repeated use of “fitness centre” and general terms such as “numerous benefits” also limits precision. Aim for natural combinations and more specific descriptions of the centre’s facilities and community services. This would make your vocabulary more flexible and accurate while preserving the formal tone.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a reason clause beginning “As fitness centre is not only…” and a conditional sentence about closure. The main message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. Examples include “As fitness centre” (missing an article), “there is no fitness centre” in a past-time context, “they had to spent,” and “If the centre would be closed.” The sentence beginning “As they will have to suffer…” is also incomplete, and punctuation is inconsistent, including missing spaces after full stops. Practise article use, past-tense forms, and standard conditional patterns; for example, “If the centre closes, local people may…” These corrections, alongside more consistently complete sentences, would improve accuracy.
