Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to request about to abandone the idea of shutting down the community center. There are majority of local population agreed to keep open the center. We locals utilize this hall for many events such as sports like badminton and basketball. The middle aged people have their own parties, exercises at this center. Also, the youth have their language lessons and group discussions on the weekends.
In addition, these groups have paid their annual membership which will be unfair to them. However, locals will not only be affected by financially but their routine will break. All individuals have made a strong bond with eachother. If the center will shuts the family will distant. This commuinity center has given a lifetime family and joy to everyone. We also had a foundation to gather some funds and utilize for the local requirements. For instance, the park gate was damaged we waited for the government but it took long so from the funds it got fixed.
Therefore, we like to request you to reconsider this idea

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
You address all three points and make your request clear: you ask the council to reconsider closing the centre, describe activities such as badminton, basketball, parties and language lessons, and explain that closure could disrupt routines and weaken community ties. The example of residents using their own funds to repair the park gate also supports the centre’s wider value to the neighbourhood. This coverage is strong, but some effects are asserted rather than fully explained—for example, “the family will distant” does not clarify exactly how closure would separate people. To strengthen the letter further, develop the likely consequences with specific details and state more explicitly how the centre benefits different groups in the community.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces the request, gives examples of how people use the centre, and then discusses the consequences of closure before making a final appeal. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking phrases such as “In addition,” “However,” and “For instance” guide the reader. At times, though, the connections between ideas are not fully clear. The shift from membership fees to disrupted routines, for example, would benefit from a more explicit explanation of how these points relate. Some references, including “these groups” and “the family,” are also vague. Use clearer transitions and name the people or groups being discussed to make the progression smoother.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “annual membership,” “group discussions,” “local requirements,” and “funds,” which helps communicate the centre’s practical and social value. There is also some variety in how you describe activities and community relationships. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unclear, such as “request about to abandone,” “the family will distant,” and “a lifetime family and joy.” Spelling errors such as “commuinity” and “eachother” also reduce accuracy. Aim for natural phrases that express your meaning precisely, and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe the centre as a place that “fosters a strong sense of community” rather than using the unclear phrase about a lifetime family.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0
You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a conditional idea beginning “If the centre…” and a reason-and-result example about the park gate. However, errors in verb forms, agreement, articles and sentence construction sometimes make the meaning difficult to follow. Examples include “There are majority of local population agreed,” “If the center will shuts,” and “locals will not only be affected by financially.” The final request also needs a complete, correctly punctuated sentence. Practise building accurate clauses with a clear subject and verb—for instance, “If the centre closes, local families will lose a place to meet.” More reliable control of these patterns would make your ideas easier to understand.
