Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0
The response touches on the centre’s value, mentioning that people use it to enjoy their free time and that sport benefits health. However, it does not fully address the required points: there are no specific details about how you and your friends or family use the centre, and the possible effects of closure are only hinted at through comments about children and adults lacking places to play. The letter also does not clearly explain the centre’s wider importance to the community or directly ask the council to keep it open. At 77 words, it is 73 words below the required minimum, which leaves the ideas substantially underdeveloped. Add concrete examples and explain the consequences of closure.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 3.5
There is a basic connection between the ideas: the response moves from people using the centre to the health benefits of sport and the lack of places to play. This gives the reader a general sense of the topic. However, the letter is presented as one long, loosely connected passage, with no clear paragraphing or progression through the three requested points. The opening about the council’s authority and the centre growing is difficult to connect to the later claims. Punctuation and linking are also limited, so several ideas run together. Organise the letter into short paragraphs—use, community importance, and effects of closure—and use clear transitions such as “In addition” and “If it closes.”
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The response uses some relevant vocabulary, including “sports and leisure,” “free time,” “health,” “traffic problems,” and “local community,” so the main topic is generally understandable. There is also an attempt to express a range of related ideas rather than repeating one word throughout. However, the vocabulary is limited and several choices or spellings reduce clarity, such as “beneficiary” where “beneficial” is intended, “emjoy,” “there” for “their,” and “free places.” Some phrases, including “play anything,” are imprecise for describing activities at a sports centre. Aim for more accurate, natural collocations such as “take part in sports,” “spend leisure time,” and “accessible facilities.”
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The response attempts to combine ideas in longer sentences, for example with “because” and “also,” and the reader can identify the general message. However, sentence boundaries and punctuation are not controlled consistently: the passage contains several clauses joined by commas, creating run-on sentences. There are also problems with articles and sentence structure, as in “there is alot of traffic problems” and “children don't have a free places.” The opening clause, “As your council gives us the authority we handle the center,” is difficult to interpret grammatically. Use shorter, complete sentences and check subject–verb agreement, articles, and singular/plural forms. For example: “The centre provides a safe place where children can play.”
