Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter as a resident of Y society located in your council.Recently there has been news about closure of the recreational center. My family and I are regular users of that center and it has always been our go to places to hold different gatherings as well.My grandparents love sitting by the lake and feeding the ducks , while I love taking evening strolls with my husband through the walking track.

This center has played a positive character in gelling the neighborhood together. Monthly sports activities for children have been very popular among all residents. In evenings when the whole community gets back from work and need to relax a little our go to place is the leisure center. The gym and spa are the most densely visited areas.

If the center is closed local people will have nowhere to spend quality time. It would take adverse effect on mental and physical well being of all our residents. Local people will have nowhere for community gatherings and this would bring distance between communities.

I want to request you to please reconsider this closure, as this is the only place that gives our community a sense of home.

Kind regards

Mk

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear request for the council to reconsider closure. The first paragraph gives specific examples of family use, including your grandparents feeding ducks and your evening walks with your husband. You also explain the centre’s community role through children’s sports and shared leisure facilities, then identify possible effects such as reduced wellbeing and fewer gathering places. These relevant details support your position. To make the case more fully developed, explain more specifically how closure would affect different groups or why alternatives would be inadequate; the consequences are currently stated quite generally, particularly “bring distance between communities.”

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: you introduce the issue and your family’s use, explain the centre’s wider value, describe consequences of closure, and finish with a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these functions, and links such as “If the center is closed” make the argument easy to follow. The overall organisation is effective, though some connections between ideas could be smoother. For example, the shift from children’s activities to adults returning from work is understandable but abrupt, and “This center” begins a new paragraph without a particularly clear link to the personal examples. Use a few more precise transitions to show how individual use leads to community-wide benefits.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the letter and includes relevant terms such as “recreational center,” “community gatherings,” “mental and physical well being,” and “reconsider this closure.” You also attempt more expressive phrases, including “sense of home,” although some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “Played a positive character in gelling the neighborhood together” does not express the intended idea idiomatically; “played a positive role in bringing the neighbourhood together” would be clearer. “Go to places” should be “go-to place,” while “densely visited areas” is an awkward collocation. Aim for natural, precise combinations rather than elaborate phrasing, and check spelling conventions consistently, such as “centre” in British English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, including the conditional “If the center is closed, local people will have nowhere to spend quality time” and the clause beginning “when the whole community gets back from work.” Meaning remains clear, but some grammatical and punctuation errors persist. In “your council.Recently,” a space is needed after the full stop; “my family and I … it has always been” also joins two independent clauses without suitable punctuation or a conjunction. In “when the whole community gets back from work and need to relax,” the subject and verb do not agree. Review sentence boundaries, agreement, and punctuation, while retaining the range of structures you already attempt.
