Student answer (Band 6.0)
Dear sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about to shut down community sports and leisure centre in our area.
I and my family are regular using facility from centre. I and my friends are using gym every morning and also we used to book tennis courts every Sunday night to have a some gettogether, and to talk social current affrais. My mother also attends the senior yoga classes on every Monday mornings.
This centre is very important for our local community as it is providing a safe and affordable place for residents of all ages to socialize, exercise and learn new skills. It is one of the positive enviroments for locals.
If the council decides to close this centre, the effects on the community will be very negative. Since other facilities are quite far, many people will simply stop begin active due to extra travel time.
I hope you will take these points into consideration and drop your plan to close centre.
Yours faithfully,
Kinal

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate purpose: you oppose the proposed closure and ask the council to reconsider. The examples of your family using the gym, tennis courts and senior yoga classes make the personal use of the centre clear, while the affordable, all-ages space explains its wider value. You also identify a plausible consequence—people may become less active if alternatives are far away. Some points, however, are less fully developed than others: the community benefits and likely effects are stated briefly, without explaining who would be most affected or what other social consequences might follow. Adding one or two specific details would make the case more persuasive and complete.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The information is arranged in a sensible sequence: your concern, how your family uses the centre, its community value, the consequences of closure, and a final request. Separate paragraphs help the reader follow these stages, and phrases such as “If the council decides to close this centre” clearly signal a shift to consequences. The progression is generally coherent, though some connections are abrupt and a few references are not fully clear—for example, “It is one of the positive environments” does not specify exactly what makes the centre positive. The list of activities could also be linked more smoothly to the social benefits. Use clearer transitions and make each paragraph develop one connected point to strengthen the flow.
Lexical Resource: Band 5.5
You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “affordable,” “residents,” “socialize,” “exercise,” and “extra travel time,” so the main message is understandable. There are also attempts to express community benefits beyond sport. However, several noticeable word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce precision: “a some gettogether,” “social current affrais,” “positive enviroments,” and “stop begin active” are difficult or unnatural formulations. “I am writing to express my concern about to shut down” also reflects an awkward phrase choice. Aim for accurate, natural combinations such as “raise concerns about the proposed closure,” “socialise and discuss current affairs,” and “stop being physically active.” Proofreading spelling and word forms would improve clarity.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
The letter includes both simple statements and longer sentences, such as the sentence explaining the centre’s role for residents of all ages. Most ideas remain understandable, but there are some recurring errors in verb forms, articles, agreement and sentence construction. For example, “I and my family are regular using” needs a more accurate verb pattern, while “I and my friends are using gym” has problems with both the subject construction and article use. In “many people will simply stop begin active,” the verb after “stop” is incorrectly formed. The sentence about booking courts also shifts from present use to “we used to,” which changes the intended meaning. Practise consistent present-tense descriptions and check verb patterns and articles when editing.
