Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to express my concern regarding the possible closure of our local sports and leisure center. I believe that this facility plays a vital role in the community and should be remain open.

Each and every person in our community, whether my friends or family members, visits the center several times a week to spend some quality time by doing activities such as swimming, using the gym, or playing badminton, etc. The center provides us ample of opportunities to be physically and mentally fit.

Furthermore, it helps to promote a healthy lifestyle and social interaction among local residents. During these time alot of people are facing problems like depression and anxiety because of not ineracting to people in public and spending thier time at house.

If the center closes it will affect them negatively in physicaly and mentaly.

I would therefore urge the council to raise some fundings and reconsider its decision to keep the center operational.

Thank you for your considerations.

Yours faithfully

Karan Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three points and maintains a clear, appropriate request: you describe visits for swimming, gym use and badminton, explain the centre’s health and social value, and warn that closure could harm residents’ wellbeing. The opening and closing also suit a formal letter. The community benefits are relevant, but some points are asserted rather than developed: for example, the reference to depression and anxiety would be stronger with a clearer explanation of how the centre helps people experiencing these problems. The effects of closure are also stated briefly as physical and mental harm, without explaining practical consequences such as fewer affordable exercise options or reduced social contact. More specific support would make the case more persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The overall arrangement is coherent: you introduce your concern, describe how people use the centre, explain its wider value, and finish with a request to the council. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and connectors such as “Furthermore” and “therefore” make the progression easy to follow. Some links are less smooth, however. The sentence beginning “During these time” shifts abruptly from general community benefits to mental-health problems, and the short paragraph about closure feels underdeveloped. The phrase “Each and every person” is also an over-generalised reference that makes the point less precise. Develop the transition between community benefits and the consequences of closure, and use clearer references to connect these ideas.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “possible closure,” “vital role,” “healthy lifestyle,” “social interaction” and “operational.” These choices communicate the main argument and show some range beyond basic wording. However, several noticeable spelling, word-form and collocation errors reduce accuracy: “alot,” “ineracting,” “thier,” “physicaly,” “mentaly” and “fundings.” Some phrases are also unnatural, such as “spend some quality time by doing activities” and “provides us ample of opportunities.” Aim for more precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully. This would make your vocabulary more controlled and persuasive while preserving the clear meaning of your points.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The letter includes both simple statements and more developed structures, such as “whether my friends or family members” and the conditional “If the center closes, it will affect them…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors are noticeable. In “should be remain open,” the verb pattern is incorrect; write “should remain open.” “Each and every person … visits” is grammatically possible, but the broad subject makes the sentence awkward, while “During these time” has a number-agreement error. The conditional sentence also needs a comma after its opening clause, and “affect them negatively in…” uses an incorrect grammatical pattern. Review verb forms, agreement, and clause punctuation, and vary sentence structures with greater control.
