Student answer (Band 5.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisafaction with your decision about demolishing the city centre of our local area.

This centre is provided lots of services such as bandminton court yards, readong rooms for older citizens and there is a club for women where all ladies meet in the evening to take a break from their busy routine. I always play bandmintn with my friends on weekends to relax and to refresh our mind.

Moreover, this community centre has used by the residents for various purposes such as organizing special events like marriages, business meetings ,for school camps and for students study projects. This is the community centre which is locally and other communty centre far away. This is difficult for other residents who live alone to visit other communty centre and some of the buildings of those centre are old. I request you not to demolish this community cnetre. I would suggest you to make a new community centre.

I hope you consider my request and suggestion. i look forw

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 4.5

You give relevant details about how you use the centre, including playing badminton with friends, and mention facilities and activities such as reading rooms and women’s gatherings. You also indicate that the centre serves residents who may struggle to travel to alternatives. However, the response only partially fulfils the task: the centre’s importance to the wider community is described in a confusing way, and the possible effects of closure are not clearly explained beyond inconvenience for some residents. Your request is clear, but the final sentence is unfinished, so the letter does not end with a complete closing. Develop the consequences—for example, reduced access to exercise, social contact, or affordable activities—and connect these directly to local people.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The response has a basic letter structure, with an opening, paragraphs, and a request to the council. Ideas are grouped to some extent: personal use appears first, followed by community uses and concerns about other centres. However, progression is uneven, and several points are difficult to follow, particularly “This is the community centre which is locally and other community centre far away.” The repeated use of “This centre” and “community centre” also makes the links between ideas feel repetitive rather than smoothly developed. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each paragraph to one task point: personal use, community value, then consequences of closure. Complete the final sentence and add an appropriate sign-off to make the letter feel finished.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use a basic range of vocabulary relevant to the topic, including “residents,” “special events,” “business meetings,” and “busy routine.” These choices help communicate the general subject. However, vocabulary is often repetitive or imprecise, and several spelling errors make the reader work harder, such as “dissatisafaction,” “readong,” and “bandminton.” Some phrases are also unnatural, including “court yards” and “for students study projects.” Aim for accurate, natural collocations and use more precise terms for the centre’s facilities and community benefits. Proofreading spelling carefully would also improve clarity. For example, “sports facilities” and “study groups” would express your meaning more naturally than the phrases currently used.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. However, the range is limited, and errors occur frequently in verb forms, articles, agreement, and sentence construction. For example, “This centre is provided lots of services” needs a correct active or passive structure, while “this community centre has used by the residents” is missing the appropriate auxiliary and participle form. The sentence beginning “This is the community centre…” is also incomplete or unclear in its construction. Capitalisation and punctuation are inconsistent, as in the lowercase “i” and spaces before commas. Practise building accurate sentences with “offers,” “is used,” and “if it closes,” then check each sentence for a complete subject and verb.
