Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing to express my concern about the possible consequences of closure of sports and leisure centre on the local community.
My friends and I go to the centre regularly for various activities such as playing matches, swimming, and to do work out in gym. This centre is essential for keeping us fit both physically and mentally. Moreover, My brother attends swimming classes in the centre along with enjoying sports activities with his friends.
Sports and leisure centre is a place where people of all age groups come to relax and unwind after their busy day. In addition, this centre is important for the wellbeing of the society as it connects people of different areas at one place, where they can chat with each other about their life matters and can stay active and healthy as well.
If centre closes, the leisure and important sports hub of the community would lost. People may no longer be able to enjoy with their family and friends because no healthy activity would be available for them to do. Moreover, it may affect the sustainability of the society by loss of unity, integerity, and healthy lifestyle. Therefore, I request you to keep the centre open for the residents use.
Thank you for your time and consideration of my request.
Yours faithfully,
Rubab Asim

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
You address all three requested points and maintain a clear, appropriate position by asking the council to keep the centre open. The examples of your own use—playing matches, swimming and working out—and your brother’s swimming classes make the letter relevant and personal. You also explain the centre’s wider value through fitness, social contact and community unity, then describe possible consequences of closure. These ideas are generally extended, although some effects are expressed broadly, such as the claim that “no healthy activity would be available”; specifying that alternatives may be costly or far away would make the impact more convincing. Overall, the purpose and audience are clear, and the main points are supported, though a little more precise development would strengthen the case.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0
The letter follows a clear progression: it states your concern, describes how your family and friends use the centre, explains its community value, and outlines the consequences of closure before making a request. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “In addition,” and “Therefore” help connect ideas. The organisation is easy to follow throughout. At times, however, the links feel somewhat formulaic, and several ideas are packed into long sentences, particularly the explanation of how the centre connects people. Use a wider range of natural transitions and make the relationship between each consequence and the centre’s closure more explicit. This would make the cohesion more flexible while preserving the strong overall progression.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including relevant terms such as “wellbeing,” “community,” “sustainability,” and “consideration.” The language communicates your concerns clearly, and some phrases, such as “relax and unwind,” add variety. There are, however, several inaccurate or unnatural choices that limit precision: “do work out in gym,” “the leisure and important sports hub … would lost,” and “residents use.” “Integerity” is also misspelled, and capitalising “My” mid-sentence is inappropriate. Aim for more natural collocations and accurate word forms, for example, “work out at the gym,” “would be lost,” and “for residents’ use.” This would make the vocabulary more controlled and idiomatic.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
You use a mix of simple and more complex sentence forms, including clauses introduced by “where,” “as,” and “because.” Most of the message remains understandable, and sentences such as “This centre is essential for keeping us fit both physically and mentally” are clear. Some grammatical errors remain, however. In “closure of sports and leisure centre,” the article and noun phrase need attention; “would lost” requires the passive form “would be lost”; and “If centre closes” needs an article. The sentence beginning “People may no longer be able to enjoy…” also has an unclear construction around “because no healthy activity would be available.” Review articles, passive verb forms, and sentence boundaries, including the missing space after “lifestyle.” Greater accuracy in these areas would improve control.
