Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 7.0)
i am writting this letter to express my concern regarding the possible closure of our local sports and leisure centre. i believe this facility plays a vital role in our community, and i would like to highlights its importance to local residents.
my family and i regularly visit this centre to participate in various physical activities. i usually go there three times a week to use the gym and swimming pool, while my younger brother attends badminton classes.on weekends my friends and i often go there to play football. the centre provides us an excellent opportunity to stay fit and socialise and enjoy our leisure time.
if the centre closes, local residents may have to travel long distances to access similar facilities. moreover, children and young people could lose a safe place to engage in physical activities, potentially leading to more sedentary lifestyles.
i would therefrore urge the councile to reconsider its decision of closing the centre.
yours faithfully,
kulwinder

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0
The letter addresses all three requirements and maintains a clear, appropriate concern about the proposed closure. You give specific details about use of the centre: you visit the gym and pool three times a week, your brother attends badminton classes, and you play football with friends. You also explain its community value through fitness, socialising and providing young people with a safe place to exercise. The likely effects of closure—longer journeys and more sedentary lifestyles—are relevant. To make the ideas more fully developed, explain more explicitly how the centre benefits the wider community, for example by bringing residents together or offering affordable activities. The consequences could also be supported with a further concrete example.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.5
The information follows a clear progression: you introduce your concern, describe how your family and friends use the centre, explain possible consequences of closure, and finish with a request to the council. Paragraphing supports this sequence, and linking expressions such as “while,” “moreover” and “if the centre closes” help connect the points. The letter is easy to follow overall. To make the organisation more polished, ensure each paragraph is separated clearly and use punctuation consistently; for instance, there is no space after the full stop in “classes.on weekends.” You could also connect the community benefits more directly to the examples of your family’s activities.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.5
You use a suitable range of vocabulary for a formal letter, including “possible closure,” “vital role,” “participate,” “sedentary lifestyles” and “reconsider.” These choices communicate the topic clearly, and some show awareness of formal register. However, several spelling and word-form errors reduce accuracy, including “writting,” “therefrore,” “councile” and “highlights” where the sentence requires “highlight.” Some phrases are also broad or less natural, such as “various physical activities” and “excellent opportunity.” Greater precision would strengthen the message—for example, specify the health or social benefits rather than relying on general wording. Proofreading spelling and checking collocations would help you use your otherwise relevant vocabulary more confidently.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.5
The response includes a useful mix of simple and more complex structures. For example, “while my younger brother attends badminton classes” adds detail effectively, and the conditional sentence beginning “If the centre closes” clearly describes a possible consequence. Most sentences remain understandable, but some grammatical and punctuation issues are present. In “I would like to highlights its importance,” the verb after “to” should be in its base form: “highlight.” The sentence “The centre provides us an excellent opportunity” needs “with” after “provides” or could be recast as “The centre gives us an excellent opportunity.” Capital letters are also needed at the beginnings of sentences and for “I.” Careful editing of these patterns would improve accuracy.
