Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Counsellor,

I want to draw your special attention towards the closing of Allandale Recreation and Sports centre.

I and my friends are highly disappointed with this news. This centre holds a special place in our heart. Since our childhood, we gather there and spend our evening by playing badminton and swimming. This help us to stay active in our sedentary lifestyle and spend quality time with each other.

For a better lifestyle and healthy community, this centre is crucial. The locals participate in various activites at the centre during their leisure time. As a result of this, they live a active lifestyle and keep themselves healthy.

Due to shuting down of this centre, the local community will be highly affected. It is difficult for them to find something for their leisure time. Besides this, their health will also be detrioted. In addition, it can cause negative effects on their mental health.

I hope you will take this in consideration and proper action will be taken.

Yours sincerely,

localite

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points: you explain that you and your friends play badminton and swim, describe the centre’s contribution to local activity and health, and outline possible effects of closure on leisure and mental and physical wellbeing. Your concern about the proposal is clear. The personal use is the most specific part, while the community benefits and likely consequences are stated more generally; for example, “they live a active lifestyle” does not explain who relies on the centre or how closure would affect particular groups. To strengthen the response, develop one or two consequences with concrete examples and make the request for the council to keep the centre open more explicit. The letter is relevant and complete, though some ideas need fuller support.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the issue, then gives personal use, community importance, possible effects, and a closing request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow these distinct points, and links such as “As a result” and “In addition” show relationships between ideas. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. “Due to shutting down of this centre” introduces the consequences awkwardly, and “Besides this” does not specify exactly which previous point it refers to. The final request is also brief and does not fully connect back to the council’s cost-saving decision. Use more precise transitions and references, and make the progression from the centre’s benefits to the case for keeping it open more explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the main points, including “sedentary lifestyle,” “quality time,” “leisure time,” and “mental health.” These choices show an attempt to use topic-related language, but several noticeable spelling, word-form, and collocation problems limit precision: “activites,” “shuting,” and “detrioted” are misspelled, while “draw your special attention towards” and “take this in consideration” are unnatural expressions. “Counsellor” is also not the appropriate form of address for the council in this context. These errors do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but more accurate, natural phrasing would make the letter more effective. Check spelling carefully and learn common formal-letter collocations.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use a mix of simple sentences and some longer structures, such as “Since our childhood, we gather there and spend our evening by playing badminton and swimming” and “As a result of this, they live a active lifestyle and keep themselves healthy.” The meaning is generally clear, but errors in agreement, articles, tense, and sentence construction occur. For example, “This help us” should have a singular verb, and “a active lifestyle” needs the correct article. “I and my friends” is also an awkward grammatical construction; use “My friends and I.” The opening and closing sentences could be formed more accurately as well. Practise checking subject–verb agreement, articles, and consistent tense, while retaining the variety of sentence forms you attempt.
