Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing this letter to give you some vital feedback and information about the local centre.

To commence with, the local centre has varities of activities which me and my family enjoys together for instance, playing sports or learning a new skill like swimming. In addition, me and my friends uses the leisure centre for a get together, sitting and having a relax day on the weekends.

In my opinion, sports and leisure centre is a really important part of the local community in many ways. People nowdays have a very stressfull life which can have a negative effect on their health. However, sports and leisure centre can eliminate some of the stress in their life by spending some quality time with family and friends and enjoying the facilities of the centre.

Lastly, I believe if the centre closes this might have a very negative effect on the mental and physical health of local people. Beacuse individuals might not be able to enjoy the vast facilities and activities given by the centre, which can cause depression and obesity among younger children.

I hope this feedback would be helpful.

Yours faithfully,

Mavi

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

You address all three points and maintain a clear, appropriate purpose: you explain how your family and friends use the centre, why it supports community wellbeing, and what closure could mean for local people. The examples of swimming, learning skills, and meeting friends make the first point concrete, while the links to stress, mental health, and obesity extend your argument. The effects of closure are relevant, though they are stated quite generally; for example, you could explain what alternatives might be unavailable or how particular groups would be affected. The opening and closing are suitable for a formal letter. More specific support for the consequences would make the response more fully developed.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear progression: it introduces its purpose, covers each requested point in a separate paragraph, and ends with a polite closing. Sequencing phrases such as “To commence with,” “In addition,” and “Lastly” help the reader follow the ideas, and the overall organisation is easy to understand. Some linking is a little formulaic, however, and “In my opinion” does not add much because the letter already presents your view. The connection between the centre’s community value and the specific consequences of closure could also be made more explicit. Use a wider variety of natural transitions and connect each consequence directly to the activities or services people would lose.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the topic and includes relevant expressions such as “local community,” “quality time,” “mental and physical health,” and “facilities.” You also attempt more formal wording, including “vital feedback” and “eliminate some of the stress,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural. “A get together” and “having a relax day” do not express the intended ideas naturally, while “varities,” “nowdays,” “stressfull,” and “Beacuse” show spelling errors. These do not prevent the reader from understanding your message, but they limit precision and control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; precise phrases such as “socialise” or “relieve stress” would suit this letter well.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple and more extended sentence forms, including a conditional idea about what might happen if the centre closes and a relative clause in “which can have a negative effect on their health.” The message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors recur. For example, “me and my family enjoys” and “me and my friends uses” have incorrect subject forms and verb agreement; “the local centre has varieties” also needs a plural verb pattern. Articles are missing in “sports and leisure centre is,” and the sentence beginning “Because individuals might not be able to enjoy…” is a fragment when separated from the previous sentence. Review subject–verb agreement, articles, and sentence boundaries, while retaining your attempts at complex structures.
