Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my concern about the local community centre.

The centre is a very nice place to enjoy and relax. My friends and I always use our local centre for many purposes. We play games and participate in sports activities not only for fun but also to keep fit. Sometimes, I like to spend time with new people to socialise more.

Moreover, I think a sports and leisure centre is crucial for the local community because it provides more opportunities for healthy living. People can play games that promote an active lifestyle. Also, they get a chance to meet new people and talk with them instread of sitting home.

If centre was close then it can effects on residents'life because they have busy routine due to work and study. So, they might be feel alone and unhealthy.

I hope you are understand my persective and you would more efforts in the support of the community.

Yours Faithfully,

Karanvir Singh

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

You address all three requested points and maintain a clear purpose: you are writing to oppose the proposed closure. The examples of playing games, taking part in sports and socialising explain how you use the centre, while the benefits of exercise and meeting others show its community value. You also identify possible effects, particularly loneliness and poorer health. These relevant ideas give the response a solid foundation, and the explanation of the centre’s importance is reasonably clear. However, the consequences of closure are less fully developed than the other points, and some claims remain general. Explain more specifically who would lose access to activities and what alternatives might be unavailable. A more direct, developed closing request to the council would also strengthen the letter.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 7.0

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces your concern, describes personal use, explains wider benefits, and then considers the effects of closure. Paragraphing helps distinguish these points, and linking expressions such as “Moreover,” “Also,” and “So” make the relationships between ideas understandable. The sequence is logical and the reader can follow your argument without difficulty. To make the organisation more polished, use transitions that show the precise relationship between points rather than relying on a small set of familiar connectors. The final paragraph could also connect the predicted effects more explicitly to your request that the council keep the centre open. A more purposeful closing would give the letter a stronger sense of completion.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough relevant vocabulary to communicate the topic, including “sports activities,” “keep fit,” “healthy living,” “active lifestyle,” and “socialise.” These expressions help convey both personal and community benefits. However, the range is not consistently precise or natural, and several word-choice, collocation and spelling problems reduce fluency. For example, “a very nice place to enjoy and relax” is vague, while “spend time with new people to socialise more” is repetitive. “Instread” and “persective” are spelling errors, and “effects on residents’life” is an awkward phrase. Aim for more specific language about access, wellbeing and community participation, and check spelling and collocations carefully. This would make your argument clearer and more convincing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including “not only for fun but also to keep fit” and a conditional sentence about what might happen if the centre closes. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “If centre was close then it can effects” has problems with the article, conditional structure and verb form; “they might be feel” uses an incorrect verb pattern; and “I hope you are understand” has an unnecessary auxiliary. There are also issues with possessive and plural forms in “residents’life.” Practise forming conditionals consistently and review verb patterns after modal verbs and “hope.” More accurate control of these structures, alongside your existing sentence variety, would improve the letter.
