Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my dissatisfaction with the closer of the sports and leisure center.

Although the center has not been used by the professional player much, the dwellers use this centre everyday. Exercising and walking are main activities, which me and my friends particularly perform in this center. Apart from these activities, my family members practice yoga in the morning, as this center has clean and fresh open space.

Local people use this center a lot, youngsters in particular, they play Football, Cricket and Basketball, this will not only allows them to practicle their skills but also improves their physical fitness. In addition, elderly people prefer to use this center in evening, with this they improve their social circle.

If this centre closes it will certianlly effect on the physical and mental health of the citizens, as they use this centre for various physical activities and for social getherings. This green open space is crucial for the city and for their dwellers for better health.

I would appreciate it if you could change your plan and keep the doors open for locals.

Yours faithfully,

Nardeep Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 7.0

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear, appropriate position: you oppose the closure and ask the council to keep the centre open. You give relevant personal examples, including exercising and walking with friends and your family practising yoga, then explain benefits for young people and older residents. You also identify possible effects on physical and mental health and social contact. These details make the response purposeful and sufficiently developed overall. To strengthen it further, explain more specifically how closure would affect different groups—for example, whether residents would lose an affordable place to exercise or have fewer opportunities to meet—rather than relying mainly on general claims about health and community value.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The letter has a clear overall progression: it introduces your objection, describes how people use the centre, explains its community value, and outlines consequences before making a request. Paragraphing helps distinguish these stages, and linking expressions such as “Apart from,” “In addition,” and “If this centre closes” guide the reader. This gives the response a coherent structure. However, some connections within sentences are awkward or unclear, particularly “Local people use this center a lot, youngsters in particular, they play…” and “with this they improve their social circle.” These joins make the flow less smooth. Use clearer sentence boundaries and more precise referencing, and vary the links between ideas so the progression feels less list-like.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough vocabulary to communicate the topic and purpose, including “physical fitness,” “social circle,” “mental health,” and “social gatherings.” The tone is generally suitable for a formal letter to the council. However, noticeable spelling and word-choice errors reduce precision, such as “closer” for “closure,” “practicle” for “practise,” “certianlly,” and “getherings.” Some combinations are also unnatural: “the professional player” and “effect on the physical and mental health” do not express your meaning idiomatically. Aim to check spelling carefully and learn common collocations, such as “professional athletes,” “have an effect on,” and “maintain social connections.” This would make your message more fluent and precise.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex structures, including a conditional sentence beginning “If this centre closes” and a relative clause in “activities, which me and my friends particularly perform.” The main message remains understandable, but errors in sentence construction and agreement are noticeable. For example, “which me and my friends particularly perform” has an awkward clause structure, while “this will not only allows them” combines incompatible verb forms. The sentence beginning “Local people use this center a lot, youngsters in particular” also joins clauses without a clear grammatical connection. Practise building accurate complex sentences and check subject–verb agreement and verb forms; for instance, use “this not only allows them … but also improves…” or recast the sentence with a plural subject.
