Dear Sir or Madam,
Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my concern to the latest news of the closure of the community centre.
The Goreway community centre has been a point of attraction for all ages in the community. Elderly, children and youngsters meet each other at the complex for various activities. For instance, children enjoy the kids' play area, the elderly use the trail paths for walks, and youngsters access the gym and pool areas. Especially the weekends and red-letter days where every one gets out of their houses and enjoy the community time.
During special events, the local community enjoys the centre's accessible activities by keeping themselves fit and active, as well as socialising together. We have various local groups in the area organising events from time to time to promote community harmony. For instance, a summer camp was held past summers.
But, if the community centre is closed, it will be affect the locals at large becuase everyone does not have access to gym or expensive fitness centres. Also, the centre was closer to our houses and location and we have to commute half an hour drive to get the same level of facilities, which is inconevnient for the ones who do not drive like children and aged. This consumes both time and money.
I would request you to please re-consider your decision before closing the community centre as it would be a point of inconvenience for the locals. I would appreciate if you would look into this matter at your earliest convenience.
I look forward to your final response on this matter.
Yours sincerely,
Nav.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
The letter addresses all three points and makes its purpose clear: you object to the proposed closure and ask the council to reconsider. The examples of children using the play area, older residents walking on the trails, and younger people using the gym and pool give relevant detail about how the centre serves different groups. You also explain its community role through shared activities and local events, and identify likely effects such as extra travel, cost, and reduced access for people who do not drive. Some points are less fully developed: the summer-camp example is brief, and the consequences of closure could be linked more explicitly to residents’ health or social connections. A little more explanation of these effects would make the case more persuasive.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5
The letter has a clear overall structure: it introduces the concern, describes the centre’s users and community value, explains the consequences of closure, and ends with a request. Paragraphing helps the reader follow this progression, and examples such as “For instance” support the relevant points. The sequence is generally logical, though some links feel mechanical or unclear. “But” begins the closure paragraph abruptly, while “During special events” does not clearly connect the centre’s everyday uses to its wider community role. The sentence about weekends and “red-letter days” is also a fragment, which interrupts the flow. Use complete sentences and make transitions show more precisely how each paragraph develops the argument.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of vocabulary for the topic, including “accessible activities,” “community harmony,” “commute,” and “inconvenient.” These choices help explain the centre’s value and the practical effects of closure. There are also attempts at more specific expressions, such as “point of attraction,” although this is not the most natural collocation in this context; “popular gathering place” would be clearer. Some word choices and spelling errors reduce precision, including “becuase,” “inconevnient,” and “red-letter days,” which sounds unusual for the intended meaning. “The same level of facilities” is also vague. Aim for natural collocations and proofread spelling so that your otherwise relevant vocabulary is consistently clear.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0
The letter includes both simple statements and attempts at more complex structures, for example the sentence beginning “if the community centre is closed” and the explanation of how different groups use the facilities. Meaning is generally clear, but some grammatical errors remain. “I am writing this letter to express my concern to the latest news” has an incorrect preposition pattern, and “it will be affect the locals” uses an incorrect verb form. The sentence beginning “Especially the weekends” is incomplete, while “everyone gets out … and enjoy” has a subject–verb agreement problem. There are also issues with articles and sentence construction in “I would appreciate if you would look into this matter.” Review complete sentence formation, verb agreement, and conditional structures; greater accuracy across these patterns would strengthen the letter.
