Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to express my disappointment after knowing, the community centre is getting close. The centre plays an importsnt role in most people who are a part of community.

Personally, me and my friends really like the cricket playground; we usually play in the evenings. Also, my parents use the running tracks to walk at late night after dinner. Sometimes, I enjoys riding cycle here.

The sports centre is generating enough money to run the community centre by conducting multiple sports events, which include: soccer, cricket and football. Next, individuals use the leisure centre to read books in the library as well as to watch movies in the theatre.

Closure of the community centre can make negative impact on local community. The children might not be able to do physical activities as there are no other playgrounds nearby. Nextly, people who work in corporate offices, they use the centre for the gym; they might have to travel to other city for the gym. I would appreciate if you can take your decision back.

I look forward to hearing from you.

Yours faithfully,

Harshdeep Singh.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three requested points and maintains a clear purpose: you describe how you and your family use the centre, explain its community value, and outline consequences of closure. Specific examples such as playing cricket, using the running track, and children losing access to nearby play facilities make the response relevant. The request to reconsider the decision is also appropriate. The community-benefit section is less fully developed: the claim that events generate enough money is not supported with details, and the library and theatre are mentioned without explaining their wider value. To strengthen the letter further, develop these points and connect each consequence more explicitly to local residents’ needs.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall arrangement: it opens with the purpose, moves to personal use, then discusses community benefits and possible effects before closing politely. This makes the main message easy to follow. However, some links feel mechanical or unclear, particularly the repeated use of “Next” and “Nextly.” The sentence beginning “The sports centre is generating enough money” also shifts between the sports centre and community centre, making the reference less precise. Group related ideas more deliberately and use a wider range of natural transitions, or connect points through explanation rather than adding a linking word. This would make the progression smoother while preserving the clear paragraph structure.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use enough topic-related vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “running tracks,” “sports events,” “library,” “theatre,” and “physical activities.” The tone is generally suitable for a formal letter. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or awkward, such as “getting close” for a centre that may shut, “importsnt role,” and “take your decision back.” “Cricket playground” is also not the natural term for a place to play cricket. These choices do not prevent understanding, but they limit precision and make parts of the letter sound less natural. Aim for accurate, conventional phrases for closure, community services, and requests to the council.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt both simple and more developed sentence forms, including the explanation beginning “The children might not be able to…” and the sentence describing the centre’s events. The overall meaning remains understandable, but some grammatical errors occur. For example, “me and my friends” should use a subject form, “I enjoys” has incorrect subject–verb agreement, and “people who work in corporate offices, they use…” has an unnecessary repeated subject. The opening sentence also has an awkward clause structure, while “I would appreciate if” needs a more complete construction. Review pronoun case, agreement, and sentence boundaries, then check each sentence for a clear subject and verb. More accurate control of these patterns would improve clarity.
