IELTS Writing Task 1 question

Write a letter to the local council. In your letter

You do NOT need to write any addresses.

Begin your letter as follows:

Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 5.0)

I am expressing this letter to community leaders who are well-maintaining the local community hall for the people.

The hall which is located on the main floor helps folks to use it as it is free for everyone leaving nearby and is convience as people can come at any time whenever they have leisure time as the hall is open 24/7.I basically use this centre on weekends with my friends to play cricket as it has wide range of space available not only we enjoy playing there but folks who come there for joking or playing with there kids do enjoy watching us as they are your cheerleaders. I believe there should be one leisure centre in every city where people can go and spend their free time and enjoy nature. in addition to this ,if an individual is alone in the centre they can join any sports played by the teams which can help to relax your mind.

The possible effects on local people if the centre closes would be ,they will not have a place where they can play with the outdoor activity .Also , what i feel is more staying home can depress you .So , its better to have a place where an individual can go and relax.

I hope this letter finds you .Thank you for maintainig the community centre and helpinhg people to stay fit.

Thank you

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the main situation and include relevant details about using the centre: you say you play cricket there with friends at weekends and describe other visitors bringing children. You also explain that it offers a place to exercise, socialise and relax, and mention that staying at home could affect people’s wellbeing. However, the letter does not clearly ask the council to keep the centre open, and the importance of the centre for the wider community is only partly developed. The possible effects of closure are also brief and general. Develop these points with specific consequences, such as reduced access to affordable exercise or fewer opportunities for young people to socialise, and state your request directly.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The response has a basic overall structure, moving from how you use the centre to its community value and the effects of closure. Paragraph breaks help distinguish these topics. However, progression within the long opening paragraph is difficult to follow: personal use, other visitors, and general claims about leisure centres are joined together without clear transitions. Some linking is awkward or repetitive, as in “in addition to this” and “Also,” while references such as “they” and “your” do not always make it clear who is meant. Organise the letter into focused paragraphs, use linking phrases only where they clarify the relationship between ideas, and keep pronouns consistent.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “leisure centre,” “cricket,” “community,” “sports,” and “relax.” This gives the reader a basic understanding of your message. However, the range is limited and several word choices or collocations sound unnatural, such as “expressing this letter,” “wide range of space,” and “outdoor activity.” There are also spelling errors, including “convience,” “maintainig,” and “helpinhg,” which reduce accuracy. Choose more natural phrases and check spelling carefully. For example, you could describe the centre as “a valuable community facility” and say it provides “a spacious area for sports and recreation.”

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and longer sentence forms, and the main message is generally understandable. However, longer sentences are often poorly controlled, particularly the sentence beginning “I basically use this centre on weekends,” which runs several ideas together without suitable punctuation. There are recurring errors in articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries, as in “there should be one leisure centre” followed by “in every city,” and “more staying home can depress you.” Capitalisation and punctuation are also inconsistent, including lowercase sentence openings and missing spaces after full stops. Use shorter, complete sentences when expressing separate points, and check articles, verb forms, and punctuation during revision.
