Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing to inform you about the need for a sports and leisure centre in Tottenham city. One of the main reasons is that children play football in the centre whenever they have a match with other teams; they use the centre for practice. In addition, me and my friends take care of plants and flowers once a week to maintain the park for not only for photography, but also for giving basketball classes for basketbal to juniors.

However, there will be multiple effects on people living in this area if the centre were to close. Firstly, people will not have a place for a morning walk because another park is far from our apartment. Second possible reason is people living in this apartment arrange a festival yearly, which will not be possible after closing the centre.

I hope you will look into this issue and take possible action as soon as possible.

Yours faithfully,

Simar

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The letter addresses the requested points by describing children’s football practice, your friends’ activities, and possible consequences of closure. The examples of a yearly festival and the distance to another park help explain why the centre matters locally. However, the importance of the centre is less fully explained than its use and possible loss: for example, the link between caring for plants, photography, and basketball classes is difficult to follow. The effects on residents are relevant but could be developed further by explaining how losing these facilities would affect exercise, social contact, or children’s opportunities. A clearer, more direct explanation of the centre’s community value and a specific request that the council keep it open would make the response more complete and persuasive.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a recognisable structure: it introduces the issue, gives examples of use, describes possible effects, and ends with a request for action. Paragraphing helps separate the main points, and transitions such as “In addition,” “Firstly,” and “Second” guide the reader. However, some connections are unclear or mechanical. The sentence about maintaining the park “not only for photography, but also for giving basketball classes” combines activities without explaining their relationship, and “Second possible reason” does not clearly signal a consequence. The opening also promises to explain the centre’s need, but the ideas are not grouped or developed in a fully logical sequence. Use clearer topic sentences and connect each example explicitly to the centre’s community role.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

The response uses enough vocabulary to communicate the main ideas, including “maintain,” “local community,” “festival,” and “take possible action.” It also attempts more specific expressions such as “basketball classes” and “morning walk.” However, several choices are imprecise or repetitive, which limits clarity: “need for a sports and leisure centre” is broad, while “multiple effects” and “possible reason” do not accurately introduce the consequences being discussed. There are also spelling and word-form issues, including “basketbal,” and the phrase “for not only for photography” is awkward. Choose more precise terms for the centre’s facilities and their benefits, and check spelling and collocations carefully so that the reader can follow each example easily.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You use both simple sentences and some more complex forms, including “if the centre were to close” and the “not only…but also” construction. Most of the message remains understandable, but some grammatical errors and punctuation problems reduce accuracy. For example, “me and my friends take care” should use a subject form, and “people living in this apartment arrange a festival yearly” needs clearer number and article choices. The sentence beginning “One of the main reasons is that…” is followed by a semicolon-like run-on in “practice. In addition,” where a space and clearer sentence boundary are needed. The final paragraph also shifts from “will” to “were to close” without a consistent conditional pattern. Review pronouns, articles, agreement, and sentence boundaries.
