Student answer (Band 7.5)
Visuals give a brief idea behind the situation that is often shown on television and newspapers. Whilst, others opine that shown photographs by media generally hold less importance than words. I agree with the former statement as I believe that picturized moments grasp more attention and easy way of conveying a message.
One of the primary reasons pictures are so powerful and effective is that it provides clear understanding to the reader. Compared to lengthy written explanations, photographs illustrate immediate emotional impact, seriousness and insight into the circumstances. For example, the pictures showing the destruction by the recent wildfire in Ontario alert viewers in Canada. Thus, this content evokes empathy and encourages people to donate or provide some sort of help required in the situations.
Furthermore, pictures create stories and aid in making moments more memorable. Those followers of news media who do not have enough time or patience to read detailed articles are more likely to remember things from images. This approach is one of the easiest ways to communicate around the world despite a lack of language understanding. For instance, the audience of the FIFA World Cup comes from different linguistic backgrounds and during sports competitions or events, they rely on visuals shown on screen rather than the host’s manuscripts.
However, words still play a crucial role in providing the context and accuracy of the scenario. Sometimes the photos are misleading and unclear if presented without explanations. A single picture cannot depict the whole story, which may lead to confusion.
Overall, I believe that pictures are more effective than reading words as it alerts the viewer, show emotional connections and increase understanding. However, the power of words should not be neglected as well-written information provides in depth sight. Together the explanation could be complete and balanced.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
You have addressed all parts of the task and maintained a clear position throughout. Your ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the Ontario wildfire and the FIFA World Cup. The argument is well-developed, and you have acknowledged the counter-argument regarding the importance of words, which adds depth to your response. To reach a higher band, ensure that your introduction clearly outlines your position without using slightly awkward phrasing like 'picturized moments'. Overall, the response is well-focused and directly answers the prompt.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, and you have used cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore', 'However', and 'Thus' to link your points effectively. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate your arguments from the counter-argument. While the flow is generally smooth, some transitions could be more sophisticated to avoid a slightly mechanical feel. Referencing is clear, and the overall structure supports the reader's understanding of your position.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, including terms like 'misleading', 'linguistic backgrounds', and 'evokes empathy'. There are some minor issues with word choice and collocation, such as 'picturized moments' (which is not standard English) and 'easy way of conveying' (which lacks a subject). You attempt to use less common vocabulary, which is good, but ensure these terms are used in their correct context. The vocabulary is sufficient to convey your meaning clearly, though it lacks the precision and sophistication required for higher bands.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While many sentences are clear, there are some grammatical errors, such as 'it provides' (should be 'they provide' to agree with 'pictures') and 'show emotional connections' (should be 'shows' or 'show' depending on the subject). Punctuation is generally accurate, but there are occasional slips in subject-verb agreement. The errors present do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band where error-free sentences are more frequent.
