IELTS Writing Task 2 question

News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures.

Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words.

What is your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 7.0)

In the contemporary era, whether news stories are published on newspapers or whether these are telecasted on Television, these stories are mostly posted with pictures. Whereas some individuals believe that these photos are more effective than words, I think words play as crucial role as the pictures. This essay will explain the reasons for my opinion with suitable examples.

One of the primary reason why I think the words hold similar significance as the pictures in the news stories is that alone pictures can lead to misconceptions. When individuals read some news, they come to know what is explained in the pictures posted with it. However, if there are no words to explain the reality of the incident, no one can predict what happened just by looking at the photo. Even, sometimes, pictures can be misinterpreted by the viewers that spreads the wrong information among people. For instance, in Mumbai, a woman was died as the result of a severe accident of motor vehicles while a false information was spread widely due to the pictures on social media. These pictures were available on social media without any official cause of the death of the woman, and also not any information was provided with that picture.

Additionally, not only do these texts are important for providing the accurate details, but they also help the disable people by keeping them aware of the things happening all around the world. Since there are some disabilities, which deprives individuals from the sense of vision, they cannot view the details of a picture and examine the situation solely with a picture. For example, people who are blind they cannot watch the photos on television; however they can listen the speaker and can know what is the news about. Thus, I contend that the information provided in words with the news photos is as prominent as the images.

In conclusion, there are some aforementioned reasons, including the consequences of if there are no words in the news and how the news stories can affect individuals with specific disability. Therefore, I believe the data provided in the news is an indispensable part of the these news.

The vocabulary is generally adequate for the task. You use some good phrases like 'contemporary era', 'indispensable part', and 'misinterpreted'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'telecasted' (usually 'broadcast'), 'the disable people' (should be 'disabled people'), and 'a woman was died' (should be 'a woman died'). While these errors do not impede communication, they indicate a need for more precise control over word forms and collocations to reach a higher band.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('not only do these texts are important' should be 'not only are these texts important') and awkward phrasing ('people who are blind they cannot watch'). Despite these errors, the meaning is always clear, and the errors do not significantly impede communication. To improve, focus on refining complex sentence structures and ensuring consistent subject-verb agreement.
