Student answer (Band 6.5)

Animation and visualization has become increasingly prevalent in this contemporary era. Many news publishing companies have started including the portraits in their newspapers and in the news telecasting on television to attract society. It is often argued that attaching pictures in news is beneficial rather than totally theorical news. I believe that adding pictures into the news should be avoided due to several unavoidable reasons which will be discussed in following paragraph.

On the one hand some individuals thinks that including incident portraits is significant because it can provide an overview about the type of news. As it can not only be understandable for literate society, but the illiterate society can also understand the news to some extent by the help of pictures. For instance, recent survey shows that visual illustrations has become increasingly popular among miserable society. Where the lack of education is an alarming issue, providing them opportunity to learn about daily news and contribute in society.

In my perspective, news should be limited to the words because pictures attached are likely to mislead the overall meaning and purpose of news. For example, due to the hectic schedule, many people often use the skim and scan technique while reading news and sometimes only pictures provided gets attraction rather than the written story. Which may directly raise the conflicts and misunderstanding among individuals regarding the integral political or national concerns.

In conclusion, Although describing news by accompanying pictures can be effective, it can also lead to misunderstanding. Press should consider certain factors while attaching visual illustrations in news, so that the meaning and purpose of news remains unchanged.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the role of pictures in news media. You clearly state your position that pictures should be avoided, which is maintained throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that pictures can mislead or cause conflict, the explanation remains quite general. To reach a higher band, you should provide more concrete, real-world examples of how a specific type of news image has caused misunderstanding. The argument regarding 'illiterate society' is a relevant point, but it could be expanded to better explain the balance between accessibility and accuracy.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices like 'On the one hand' and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as the sentence starting with 'Which may directly raise...'. This is a sentence fragment that disrupts the flow. Improving the use of linking words and ensuring that each sentence is grammatically complete will help the progression of ideas feel more natural and sophisticated.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'prevalent', 'contemporary', and 'integral'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that occasionally hinder precision. For example, 'theorical news' is not standard English (should be 'text-based' or 'written'), and 'miserable society' is an inappropriate descriptor for people with low literacy. Additionally, 'getting attraction' is not a natural collocation; 'attracting attention' would be more accurate. Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise academic collocations would improve this score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, which is good. However, there are frequent grammatical errors that affect the clarity of your writing. Subject-verb agreement is a recurring issue, such as 'some individuals thinks' (should be 'think') and 'visual illustrations has' (should be 'have'). There are also punctuation and sentence structure issues, such as the fragment 'Which may directly raise the conflicts...'. While these errors rarely prevent the reader from understanding your main point, they are frequent enough to keep the score in the 6.0 range. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and avoiding sentence fragments will significantly improve your accuracy.
