IELTS Writing Task 2 question

News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures.

Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words.

What is your opinion about this?

Student answer (Band 8.5)

In today's media, news stories are often presented with photographs or other visual images. While written reports provide detailed information, I believe that pictures are generally more effective than words because they attract attention, create a stronger emotional impact, and help people understand events more quickly.

One important reason is that pictures immediately capture the audience's interest. Many people have busy lives and do not have time to read lengthy news articles. A powerful image can communicate the main message within seconds and encourage readers or viewers to learn more about the story. For example, photographs of natural disasters such as floods or earthquakes instantly show the scale of the damage without requiring a detailed explanation.

Another advantage of pictures is that they create a stronger emotional connection. Images of injured people, homeless families, or wildlife affected by environmental disasters often make people feel sympathy and encourage them to donate money or support relief efforts. In contrast, written descriptions may not have the same emotional effect because readers have to imagine the situation for themselves.

However, words remain essential for providing accurate facts and background information. A photograph cannot explain why an event happened, who was responsible, or what the long-term consequences may be. Therefore, pictures should support written reports rather than replace them. A combination of both allows people to understand the news more completely and avoid misunderstanding.

In conclusion, I agree that pictures are often more effective than words in attracting attention and creating emotional impact. Nevertheless, written information is still necessary to provide context and detailed explanations. Therefore, the most effective news reporting combines strong visuals with clear and accurate writing.
