Student answer (Band 7.0)

Accompanying pictures with the news on TV and newspaper has become increasingly popular. Some people believe that photographs tend to have more impact over the words because it grabs more attention from the readers as well as listeners. This essay will discuss this view before presenting my own perception.

To begin with, people who do not have interest in reading long texts or listening to the news often assume the situation by the visuals presented along with it. Although pictures do not provide enough information behind a news, by looking at them people can obtain the general idea of the topic. After getting this information they decide if they want to pursue the reading or move to the next one.

In addition, news channels broadcast their news stories in their local languages which may be difficult for people to understand who are not of the same language. In this case, images become the medium to make the headlines understandable by everybody watching them. Moreover, by publishing pictures about the celebrities newspapers, magazines and TV news channels attract audience of all ages.

In my opinion, this strategy works perfectly in the favour of journalists to keep the public entertained and to deliver the updates of the world. This is due to the fact the photographs are liked by everyone and they work as translators when required. Along with this illiterate people can also obtain knowledge about their community by looking at the pictures while not unable to read them.

In conclusion, undoubtedly photographs do an influence on public in several ways such as attracting audience, choose the topic which seems appealing to them. I firmly agree with this view not only because it becomes the focus of the story but also it is the source of information to those who do have knowledge of the language.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.0

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that pictures are more effective than words. The ideas are relevant, such as the accessibility of images for those who cannot read or those who do not speak the local language. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the point about celebrities is mentioned but not fully explored in relation to the effectiveness of the news. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific examples or deeper analysis of why images have a greater psychological impact on the audience compared to text. Overall, the position is consistent throughout the essay.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. You use cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' to guide the reader. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical or repetitive. For example, the phrase 'In my opinion' is used to start a paragraph, but the connection between the previous paragraph and this one could be smoother. Additionally, there are minor issues with referencing, such as 'do an influence on public', which is not a standard collocation. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is generally easy to follow.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using words like 'accessibility', 'visuals', and 'strategy'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation that prevent a higher score. For example, you wrote 'assume the situation by the visuals' instead of 'understand the situation', and 'do an influence on public' instead of 'have an influence on the public'. Furthermore, the phrase 'while not unable to read them' is confusing and grammatically awkward. Expanding your range of collocations and ensuring more precise word choices would significantly improve your score in this criterion.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While you attempt complex sentences, some contain errors that affect clarity, such as 'news channels broadcast their news stories in their local languages which may be difficult for people to understand who are not of the same language'. The placement of the relative clause here is awkward. There are also minor errors in articles and prepositions, such as 'behind a news' (should be 'behind a news story') and 'in the favour of' (should be 'in favor of'). Despite these errors, the meaning is generally clear, and the grammar does not impede communication.
