Student answer (Band 7.0)
In recent years, TV and newspapers have often attached photographs related to their news stories. It is widely accepted that pictures are more impressive than words because of various reasons discussed below. In my perspective, images solely cannot demonstrate the wider picture of a news and it should be explained in the text.
One of the primary reasons of using pictures while broadcasting news on TV and journalists is that they can show the seriousness of the matter which connects people emotionally. Although pictures do not express the causes, consequences of something, it manages to catch people's attention through emotions. For instance, a damage to a city or wildlife from natural or man made disasters can be shown effectively in visuals which encourage people to take serious actions in response to it such as by donation, using resources carefully and so on.
Another reason which is worth considering is that people can understand the news without reading the texts, furthermore decide accordingly whether to know about it or not. Pictures encourage individuals to know about the world updates without having knowledge about the language. This is due to the fact that TV channels and newspapers are available to everyone, people who are not familiar to language in which the news are broadcasted can manage to learn about it through its visuals. Therefore, it can work as medium of a translator of the public.
In conclusion, undoubtedly images are being successful in gaining attention about the news because it can directly connect to the public. Yet it lacks the clarity which people need to know about a headline including the reasons and results. Nevertheless, news channels should adopt a balanced approach for giving accurate information to their listeners and readers about a specific topic by explaining the news in a brief way rather than heavy texts.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5
The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear opinion that while images are effective for emotional connection, they lack the depth of written text. The ideas are relevant and supported with examples, such as the impact of disaster imagery. However, the development is slightly uneven; the second body paragraph could be more tightly focused on the 'effectiveness' aspect rather than just accessibility. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes the argument. To reach a higher band, ensure that the distinction between 'effectiveness' and 'informational value' is explored with more nuanced analysis.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5
The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct ideas. Cohesive devices such as 'For instance', 'Another reason', and 'Therefore' are used to guide the reader through the argument. However, some transitions feel slightly mechanical, and there are minor issues with referencing, such as the phrase 'the news' used as a countable noun, which occasionally disrupts the flow. Overall, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the response.
Lexical Resource — Band 7.0
The vocabulary is sufficient to convey the message clearly. You demonstrate an ability to use topic-specific language like 'broadcasting', 'disasters', and 'balanced approach'. There are some minor inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'demonstrate the wider picture of a news' (should be 'the bigger picture of a news story') and 'medium of a translator' (which is slightly awkward). While you attempt to use a range of vocabulary, some phrasing remains basic. Increasing your use of more precise collocations and idiomatic expressions would help elevate your score.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'reasons of using' (should be 'reasons for using'), 'a damage to a city' (damage is uncountable), and 'language in which the news are broadcasted' (news is singular). While these errors are noticeable, they do not impede communication. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles and uncountable nouns. Increasing the frequency of error-free complex sentences will help you move toward a higher band.
