Student answer (Band 6.5)

While broadcasting news on both newspaper and television, makers place greater emphasis on the pictures than on the wordings. While some people think it is more efficient to prefer this phenomenon, I completely disagree with the given statement, which will be discusses in the following paragraphs.

To begin with, displaying factual information would be more accurate to make the audience aware of the certain news. For instance, certain news such as a number of crime rates and road accidents can be better understandable when using accurate data as it would be insufficient to utilize visual graphics only. As a result, people find it extremely convenient to grasp the news. Hence, it is more effective to prefer words in the news rather than the pictures.

On the other hand, however, skeptics believe that prioritizing pictures can attract the individuals. This is because, many people are lazy to read lengthy written data, but find it entertaining when looking at the visuals instead. Thus, it can engage people who are interested in current affairs. Nevertheless, it would be inaccurate for people with disabilities. For example, people with blurred vision or blind ones could not possibly access the pictures. However, they can listen to the speaker when watching news channels on TV.

To conclude, although visual representation of news can entertain the viewers, I disagree with the given statements because it would not allow disabled to gain the information. Factual data, on the other hand, can be more effective to pass on the news to people.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses the prompt and maintains a clear position throughout. However, the development of ideas is somewhat limited. While you mention that words are better for factual information and pictures are better for engagement, the arguments could be extended with more specific examples or deeper analysis. For instance, the point about disabled individuals is a good attempt at a counter-argument, but it is slightly tangential to the core debate of 'effectiveness' in communication. To reach a higher band, ensure that every point directly supports your stance on why words are more effective than pictures in news reporting.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The essay is logically organized into paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use basic cohesive devices such as 'To begin with', 'On the other hand', and 'To conclude' to signal transitions. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and some referencing is slightly unclear, such as the transition between the benefits of pictures and the issue of disability. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each sentence flows naturally into the next would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, such as 'broadcasting', 'factual information', and 'current affairs'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'prefer this phenomenon' and 'wordings' (which is less natural than 'text' or 'written content'). Additionally, phrases like 'a number of crime rates' are slightly imprecise. To improve, focus on using more precise academic vocabulary and ensuring that your word choices are natural in the context of the topic.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as 'which will be discusses' (should be 'discussed'), 'can be better understandable' (should be 'better understood'), and 'the disabled' (should be 'disabled people'). While these errors do not impede communication, they occur frequently enough to prevent a higher score. To improve, focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of passive voice and adjectives. Increasing the variety of complex sentence structures while maintaining accuracy will help you reach a higher band.
