IELTS Writing Task 2 question
News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures.
Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words.
What is your opinion about this?
Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.
Student answer (Band 7.0)
Nowadays, many TV channels and newspapers are using photographs to present the news stories. Many people have the notion that pictures are useful to describe news if compared to the words, while others oppose this thought. However, I believe both pictures and words holds the same value because photos show the reality and words properly define a perticular situation.
The main reason why people think pictures are useful in describing news stories on television and in newspapers is proof. People often consider a news fake because they do not see any strong evidence of anything which has recently happened. If a picture is telecasted or published, people would immediately be drowned towards the news as they find it attracted and true, and they would make a scenario in their mind while looking at the picture and reading the story. As a result, every TV channels and newspapers include at least one picture in every news story to make it feel true and atractive.
While text describe the full details of news to the people such as location, time and sometimes the name of people who might be a part of the story. Words not only let people know if they know people who are involved in the story but also stay alert as there might be some cautions mentioned by police for local people to keep in the mind in order to be safe out there.
Words also sometimes have the beneficial information regarding new rules implemented by government and people need to follow those as mentioned. Consequently, words make people aware about things which are happening around them by describing each and every details bout a news.
I believe, although pictures depicts the truth of a news story, words tells the proper information how, when and where the situation took place. Where pictures makes news more fascinating and attract more and more people to watch or buy newspapers, text plays an important role to define the picture.
To sum up, news stories are better and useful when an image and related text is there because both have the same values to tell a better story to people.

However, there are some instances where the flow is slightly mechanical, and some referencing is a bit repetitive. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear and easy to follow throughout the text.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
The range of vocabulary is adequate for the task, though it lacks sophistication. There are some noticeable errors in word choice, such as 'drowned' instead of 'drawn', 'atractive' (spelling), and 'perticular' (spelling). The student attempts to use some topic-specific vocabulary like 'implemented' and 'evidence', which is positive. However, the repetition of basic words like 'news' and 'pictures' limits the lexical variety. To reach a higher band, the student should focus on using more precise synonyms and improving spelling accuracy.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. There are several grammatical errors, such as subject-verb agreement issues ('both pictures and words holds', 'every TV channels... include', 'pictures depicts', 'words tells'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are minor errors in sentence construction. While these errors are frequent, they do not impede the overall communication of the message.
