Student answer (Band 6.0)
Nowadays television and newspapers are full of pictures. In some people's eyes pictures are more attention grabbing and informative. I believe that picture give us quick overview but for the full detail we need to read full news.
There are plenty of people who think that pictures in news or on the magazines are more effective than the words. In my opinion it is there is no denying that pictures are more effective then words. The reason I am saying that is when someone just look at the picture they can tell what is this news is about. If there are no picture in news people have to read all the news to get idea and context what is this news about.
For example, if the news is about a natural disaster people can get idea how terribel it was and can get idea about the seriousness of the situation. Suppose if there are no picture of the incident it would not be that connecting or effective.
Furthermore, my grandfather have poor eyesight. He cannot read because if it, but he can see the picture and tell what is the news about. He do that everyday to get idea what is going on in the world. Where he don't get the picture he ask me to read for him and give the context.
In conclusion, I believe that there is no doubt that pictures are more effective than words. They are helpful in getting quick overview of news and get visuals of the incidents. But if we want to get detail overview we need to read the news.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0
The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear opinion that pictures are more effective than words, while acknowledging the need for text for detailed information. The ideas are relevant, such as the accessibility for those with visual impairments and the immediate impact of disaster imagery. However, the development is somewhat limited; the points could be expanded with more sophisticated reasoning or broader societal examples to reach a higher band. The position is consistent throughout, and the conclusion effectively summarises the main argument. To improve, ensure that each paragraph provides a deeper analysis of why pictures hold this power, rather than just stating that they do.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0
The essay is organised into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. There is a basic attempt at using cohesive devices such as 'Furthermore' and 'In conclusion'. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical, and some transitions are repetitive or simplistic. For instance, the repetition of 'what is this news is about' hinders the natural progression of ideas. The use of referencing is generally clear, but the overall structure would benefit from a more varied range of linking words to connect ideas more fluidly. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the introduction, body, and conclusion.
Lexical Resource — Band 5.5
The vocabulary is adequate for the task but lacks the range and precision required for higher bands. While the student successfully communicates their ideas, the language is often repetitive (e.g., 'news', 'pictures', 'effective'). There are some minor errors in word choice and collocation, such as 'terribel' (spelling) and 'get visuals of the incidents'. To achieve a higher score, the student should aim to incorporate more sophisticated synonyms and collocations related to media, journalism, and visual communication, and ensure greater accuracy in spelling and word formation.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally impede the reader. Common issues include subject-verb agreement ('my grandfather have', 'He do that'), article usage ('if there are no picture'), and missing prepositions or auxiliary verbs ('if there are no picture of the incident'). While the meaning is generally clear, these persistent errors prevent the text from reaching a higher band. To improve, the student should focus on basic sentence construction, specifically ensuring subject-verb agreement and consistent tense usage throughout the essay.
