Student answer (Band 5.0)

News stories on television and the newspaper are the important part of both sources of information, pictures in newspapers give it new look ,some of the masses think that pictures are the best way to explain something than the words i will give my opinion with some examples in upcoming paragraphs .

The first main reasons is sometimes people are not able to read newspaper and sometimes they feel bored to read all of the news and they saw the picture which is interesting way to read news according to my own knowledge ,a survey was conducted by the local news paper in india there are 90 percent of people like to buy the newspaper which has pictures because they feel it is the easy way to understand and news

The second main reason is it is best way for older people who do not read the news just saw the picture on newspaper they think words are so small for them according to personal experiece ,some of the newspapers are sell just for picture

on the other side, sometimes these picture are not suitable for some news, words give more information about what is happening all around the world

in conclusion , there are different point of views because sometimes picture are the only way to entertain the news and words give deep knowledge about the news but according to me picture make it more effective and perfect ,mostly everyone like the news with picture so overall picture are effective than words

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing an opinion on the effectiveness of pictures versus words. However, the development of ideas is limited. While you provide reasons such as accessibility for older people and general interest, these points are under-developed and lack depth. The example regarding the survey in India is vague and lacks sufficient detail to support your argument effectively. To improve, you should expand on your reasoning with more specific explanations or logical consequences rather than simply stating that pictures are 'easy' or 'interesting'. The position is clear, but the overall task response remains basic.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 5.0

The essay is organised into paragraphs, but the logical progression is weak. The use of cohesive devices is very limited and often repetitive (e.g., 'The first main reason is', 'The second main reason is'). There is a lack of sophisticated linking words to connect ideas within and between sentences. Furthermore, the punctuation is inconsistent, with many run-on sentences that make it difficult for the reader to follow the flow of your argument. Improving your use of transition signals and ensuring each sentence is clearly demarcated would significantly enhance the coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is sufficient to convey the basic message but is quite repetitive and lacks variety. You frequently use simple terms like 'good', 'easy', and 'interesting'. There is little evidence of less common lexical items or idiomatic language. Additionally, there are some inaccuracies in word choice, such as 'entertain the news' and 'masses', which do not fit the context perfectly. To reach a higher band, you should aim to incorporate more precise vocabulary related to media, communication, and visual literacy, and work on using collocations more accurately.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.0

The response relies heavily on simple sentence structures. While there are attempts at complex sentences, they are often grammatically incorrect or poorly punctuated, leading to run-on sentences. For example, the opening sentence is a long, comma-spliced string of clauses. There are frequent errors in subject-verb agreement, article usage, and tense consistency (e.g., 'some of the newspapers are sell'). These errors are persistent and occasionally make it difficult for the reader to grasp the intended meaning. You need to focus on mastering basic sentence construction and punctuation before attempting more complex structures.
