Student answer (Band 6.5)

Opinions are divided on the basis of representation. In this context, a section of society thinks that highlighting the picture instead of the words is the most effective way to bring the attention. I firmly believe this perspective because images can clearly reflect the idea of the topic to kids and the people who are in hurry.

To begin with, the image description is the most effective way to communicate with the teenagers. This is primarily because young kids have not enough knowledge to understand the complex sentences written in the articles, so images can help them to understand the concept in a better way. To exemplify, In India, the kid's article named Chappak usually uses the images of the buildings, monuments or the persons to highlight the news.

In addition, due to increase in the pace of the life, many adults have not enough time to read the full article, so the image can clearly reflect the idea quickly. The main rationale behind this is that the image can easily drew the attention in which the reader is highly interested. As a result, they can skip the unnecessary articles that are mentioned in the newspaper. To illustrate this, The Toronto Star is accompanying the images of stock market candles to drew the attention of the traders to read the article directly by skipping unwanted news.

To conclude, although text in the news stories is a traditional way, I think that images can play a significant role to help the reader understand the concept of the news idea more clearly.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The response addresses all parts of the prompt, providing a clear position that images are more effective than words. The ideas are relevant and supported by examples, such as the mention of 'Chappak' and 'The Toronto Star'. However, the development is somewhat limited; the explanation of why images are better for 'kids' and 'people in a hurry' is a bit repetitive. To reach a higher band, you should aim to explore the nuance of the topic further, perhaps by discussing how images can sometimes be misleading or how text provides necessary depth that images lack, thereby creating a more balanced and sophisticated argument.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The essay is logically organized with a clear introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Cohesive devices are used, such as 'To begin with', 'In addition', and 'To conclude', which help guide the reader. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical or slightly misused, such as 'In this context' in the introduction, which does not quite fit the preceding sentence. Additionally, the referencing within sentences is occasionally clunky. Improving the flow between sentences and ensuring that cohesive devices are used more naturally would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'representation', 'rationale', and 'complex sentences'. However, there are several instances of awkward word choice and collocation errors, such as 'bring the attention' (instead of 'attract attention'), 'people who are in hurry' (missing an article), and 'image can easily drew the attention' (incorrect verb tense). These errors do not impede communication, but they do prevent the essay from reaching a higher band. Focusing on collocations and ensuring correct verb forms will help improve your lexical score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The essay uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the kid's article', 'the image'), verb tenses ('can easily drew'), and sentence construction ('many adults have not enough time'). Some sentences are slightly ungrammatical, such as 'Opinions are divided on the basis of representation'. To improve, you should focus on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Increasing the variety of error-free complex structures will also help you achieve a higher band score.
