Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, newspaper and Tv news channels are significantly covering strories from all the angles which they are publishing and printing photos are one of these. Some people are of the view that pictures should be considerd as a true story teller than the written words. But, I am not completely agree with the statement.

On the one hand, It is human nature that people imagine according to the view they see which is sometimes totally opposite to the actual situation. For example, The Tribune printed a photo of a person with a gun pointing on a person's hand in 1998. Local people call the person criminal by seeing the picture only. But in the story, the newspaper explained that actuall the person is a police officer in an infomral uniform and pointing on a gangster during the special opertion. Thus, picture can be a half truth which sometimes story completes.

In addition, picture is a prove of present happening only since it cannot explain the past and future of the scene. But, in the story a writer would explain the both in detail which may complete the information.

On the other hand, story also cannot be proven without a proof of a picture of the inccident which may make it interesting and easy to understand for the readers. Moreover, in some experiments, it has been seen that people only pick news to read and watch which are with pictures or videos, otherwise they feel them boring.

In conclusion, written stroy in newspapers and TV channels is as crucial as pictures but only considering it more effctive than picture would not be practical in this fast paced era.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.0

The response addresses the prompt by discussing the effectiveness of pictures versus words in news media. You have a clear position, although it is slightly contradictory in the conclusion where you suggest both are equally crucial after arguing for the superiority of text in the body paragraphs. The ideas are relevant, such as the example of the police officer, which effectively illustrates how images can be misinterpreted. However, some points, like the claim that pictures cannot explain the past or future, are slightly underdeveloped. To reach a higher band, ensure your position remains consistent throughout and provide more nuanced analysis of why text is necessary for context.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.0

The essay is organized into logical paragraphs, each with a clear focus. You use some cohesive devices such as 'On the one hand', 'In addition', and 'In conclusion' to signal the structure. However, the flow between sentences is sometimes mechanical, and there are instances where referencing is slightly unclear, such as 'which sometimes story completes'. The transition between the idea of pictures being misleading and the idea of them being necessary for interest is a bit abrupt. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.0

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'significantly', 'misinterpreted', and 'fast-paced era'. However, there are several errors in word choice and collocation that occasionally hinder precision, such as 'picture is a prove' (should be 'proof') and 'story completes' (should be 'completes the story'). Some phrasing is also slightly unnatural, such as 'significantly covering stories from all the angles'. To improve, focus on using more precise nouns and verbs, and pay closer attention to word forms and common collocations in English.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('a picture', 'the story'), verb forms ('should be considerd'), and subject-verb agreement ('picture can be a half truth'). Punctuation is generally functional, but there are some issues with capitalization and missing commas. The errors do not impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on proofreading for basic subject-verb agreement and article usage would significantly improve your accuracy.
