Student answer (Band 8.0)

Nowadays, news stories on television and in newspapers are often accompanied by photographs and other visual images. Some people believe that these pictures are more effective than written words in communicating information. I largely agree with this view because images can attract people's attention and create a strong emotional response, although words are still necessary to provide detailed information.

One major reason why pictures are effective is that people can understand them quickly. Reading a long news article requires time and concentration, whereas a photograph can communicate the main idea within a few seconds. For example, during a natural disaster such as a flood or an earthquake, pictures of damaged buildings and affected families can immediately show the seriousness of the situation. As a result, readers may understand the scale of the event before reading the full article.

Another important advantage of pictures is their emotional impact. Images can make a news story feel more real and personal. For instance, a photograph showing people suffering because of war or poverty may have a stronger effect on the public than a written description alone. Such images can encourage people to pay attention to important social issues and even provide help. However, pictures cannot always explain the complete story. Written information is necessary to provide facts, causes, statistics and background details. Moreover, an image without proper explanation can sometimes be misunderstood.

In conclusion, I believe that pictures are often more effective than words because they communicate information quickly and have a powerful emotional impact. Nevertheless, the most effective news reports combine strong images with accurate written information.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The response fully addresses all parts of the prompt. You clearly state your position in the introduction and maintain it throughout the essay. The arguments regarding the speed of comprehension and the emotional impact of images are well-developed and supported with relevant examples, such as the mention of natural disasters and war. You also provide a balanced view by acknowledging the necessity of text for factual depth, which demonstrates a sophisticated approach to the topic. The ideas are extended logically, and the conclusion effectively synthesizes your main points. The response is well-focused and meets all requirements of the task.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

The essay is logically organized with a clear progression of ideas. Each paragraph has a central theme, starting with the introduction, moving to the two main advantages of images, and concluding with a balanced summary. You use cohesive devices effectively, such as 'One major reason', 'Another important advantage', 'For instance', and 'Nevertheless', which help guide the reader through your argument. The paragraphing is appropriate and contributes to the overall clarity of the text. The flow between sentences is smooth, and there is no evidence of mechanical or repetitive use of linking words.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to discuss the topic with precision. Phrases such as 'create a strong emotional response', 'communicate the main idea', and 'social issues' are used accurately. You also incorporate less common items like 'seriousness of the situation' and 'accurate written information' appropriately. While the vocabulary is functional and clear, it could be further elevated by incorporating more sophisticated collocations or idiomatic expressions to reach the highest band. However, the current range is more than adequate for the task, and there are no errors in word choice or spelling that impede communication.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 8.0

The essay displays a good variety of complex structures, such as the use of conditional-like structures ('if... then' implied) and subordinate clauses ('although words are still necessary...', 'whereas a photograph can communicate...'). The majority of your sentences are error-free, and your control over punctuation is excellent. You demonstrate a high level of accuracy throughout the text. While the sentence structures are correct and varied, incorporating a slightly wider range of advanced grammatical forms (such as passive voice or more complex inversion) could further enhance the sophistication of your writing. Overall, the grammar is highly reliable.
