Student answer (Band 8.0)
In the digital age, news stories in newspapers and on television are almost always accompanied by pictures or photographs. While some critics argue that images act as reliable visual proof that is more effective than text, I believe that written storytelling is equally essential to explain the full context behind those pictures.
On the one hand, photographs play a powerful role in news media because they capture immediate attention and provide visual evidence. Unlike written descriptions, which require time and effort to read, a single image can convey the reality and emotion of an event in a split second. For example, photographs of natural disasters or major historical events instantly show the scale of an incident, offering visual proof that builds trust and credibility among readers who might be skeptical of text alone.
On the other hand, images by themselves can easily be misunderstood or misinterpreted without descriptive text. Written storytelling provides crucial context, background details, and explanations that pictures simply cannot communicate on their own. For instance, while a photograph can show the emotional impact of a protest, it cannot explain the underlying political causes, economic factors, or motives of the participants. Therefore, textual reporting is necessary to give depth and accuracy to visual content.
In conclusion, although pictures serve as compelling visual proof that can engage audiences faster than words, I firmly believe that written journalism remains indispensable. A complete and accurate news report relies on a balance of both imagery to capture attention and storytelling to explain the broader reality.

The prompt asks whether pictures are more effective than words in news stories, and the student successfully takes a balanced stance—acknowledging the strengths of visual media while arguing that written storytelling is equally essential. Ideas are well developed and supported with relevant examples, such as photographs of natural disasters building trust, contrasted with the need for textual reporting to explain underlying political or economic causes. The position is sustained logically from the introduction through to the conclusion, meeting all requirements of the task achievement descriptor comfortably at a high level.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 8.0

Cohesive devices are managed skilfully and appropriately without feeling mechanical, utilizing signposts such as "On the one hand", "On the other hand", and "Therefore" to guide the reader seamlessly through the arguments. Paragraphing is used sufficiently and appropriately, with each paragraph maintaining a clear central topic.
Lexical Resource — Band 8.0
The student demonstrates a wide, flexible, and natural range of vocabulary appropriate for an IELTS General Training essay. Less common lexical items are used skilfully, including terms like "accompanied by pictures", "reliable visual proof", "underlying political causes", and "indispensable".
