IELTS Writing Task 2 question

News stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by pictures.

Some people say that these pictures are more effective than words.

What is your opinion about this?

Give reasons for your answer and include any relevant examples from your own knowledge or experience.

 

Student answer (Band 6.0)

The news stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompained by pictures, that are really impactful in telling the story behind the news. Sometimes we do not find time to read news thorughly or watch TV but a glance at picture says it all.

In my opinion it is right that graphics plays an important role in delivering the effective news.

In this modern era of technology we have become more prone to use the mobile phones.There are many apps in mobile phone which works with algorithm, making people to watch the five to ten second video or just a picture post that provides the relevanf information.

Firstly, we can discuss about the news stories on TV. In our daily life we see that we more easily get involved in visual prompts rather than audios. Although, we focus on reading the news but the pictures make them more captivating. The audience of TV likes to see colorful pictures and graphics of incidents so that they can empathise with the suppressors.

Secondly, in newspapers there are cartoonic demonstrations of current affairs. Specially in Jung newspaper there is a small box on left corner of last page that shows the current political situation in comics. That pictorial representation of political situations makes it easier for us to understand the news stories in a fun way.The pictures of accidents, polliticians and current affairs make the news more relatable with nation. for instance, if a person had a difficulty in reading or he is illliterate he can easily see the picture and understand the news.

Pictures also play inevitable role in the criminal cases and laws. The pictures in newspapers or covered by media can be used as an evidence

In conclusion, i would like to give my opinion that pictures in news stories on TV and in newspaper are very important and effective.

The student uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common items such as 'captivating', 'empathise', 'inevitable', and 'pictorial representation'. However, there are noticeable spelling and word choice errors throughout the text, including 'accompained', 'thorughly', 'relevanf', 'cartoonic', 'polliticians', and 'illliterate'. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they restrict the lexical score. The writer shows an ability to discuss the topic with some flexibility, but inaccuracies prevent attainment of higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

The response incorporates a mix of simple and complex sentence forms, demonstrating attempts at relative clauses and conditional structures. However, grammatical accuracy is inconsistent. There are frequent minor errors involving missing prepositions, incorrect verb forms ('apps in mobile phone which works'), punctuation lapses, and incomplete sentences, such as the final sentence on criminal cases which lacks a full stop and a complete predicate. Despite these errors, meaning is generally clear throughout most of the text, placing the grammatical performance firmly at a Band 5.5.
