Student answer (Band 5.0)

It is widely believed that pictures are more understandable than words. I largely agree with this perspective as images hold more information and easy to understand make this statement particularly convincing.

The foremost reason for my position is that images illustrates vast information.

This is mainly because people do not need to read whole paragraph, just one look on picture can explain everything by itself. A clear illustration of this can be seen in puzzle solving games, as without a single word it shows a full story. As a result, it helps to minimize the reading time.

In other words, it looks beautiful and attractive when pictures depicits the story. For instance, barbie picture is more impressive than her name.

Another compelling argument is that, graphics are easy to understand for childern and adults.

visuals can be memorised effortlessly. The reason behind this is story books with pictures makes our interest more than reading a article without snapshots.

A good example of this, Alphabet book which looks more interesting to kids with pictures.

consequently, they can learn easily.

In conclusion, I remain firmly covinced that, I largely agree with this viewpoint as pictures are easy to understand and interesting for everybody both of which can have a significant impact on learning.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0

The response addresses the prompt by expressing a clear position agreeing that pictures are more effective than words, supporting this with ideas regarding information density and accessibility for children. However, the response suffers from a significant drawback: it contains only 211 words, which falls well short of the mandatory 250-word minimum specified for Task 2. This under-length limitation directly impacts the level of development and extension required for higher bands. While the main ideas are introduced, they remain somewhat under-developed due to the brevity of the paragraphs and simplistic supporting examples, such as the mention of 'barbie picture'. Consequently, the task achievement is constrained to a Band 5.0.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.0

The text is structured into an introduction, two body paragraphs, and a conclusion, showing basic paragraphing skills. However, the logical progression is frequently disrupted by mechanical and repetitive cohesive devices, such as 'The foremost reason for my position is that...' and 'Another compelling argument is that...'. Furthermore, referencing is sometimes unclear, and the transition between sentences feels abrupt in places, such as transitioning from alphabet books to 'consequently, they can learn easily.' Paragraphs are very short and lack internal cohesion beyond simple listing connectors. Overall, this demonstrates the characteristics of Band 5.0, where organisation is present but lacking in smooth, logical progression.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The vocabulary used is relatively basic and repetitive, with frequent reliance on simple words like 'pictures', 'words', 'easy to understand', and 'interesting'. There are attempts at less common vocabulary, such as 'compelling argument' and 'significant impact', but these are offset by noticeable word choice and collocation errors, such as 'images illustrates vast information' (subject-verb agreement and collocation) and 'depicits' (spelling). The limited range is minimally adequate for communicating the basic opinion, fitting the criteria for a Band 5.0.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The writer attempts a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but many of the complex structures are faulty or contain basic grammatical errors. Examples include 'images hold more information and easy to understand make this statement particularly convincing' (faulty clause structure) and 'story books with pictures makes our interest' (agreement error). Punctuation is also problematic, particularly with comma splices and run-on phrasing in sentences like 'consequently, I remain firmly covinced that, I largely agree with this viewpoint as...'. Frequent errors across simple and complex forms cause some difficulty for the reader, aligning with Band 5.0 descriptors.
