Student answer (Band 8.5)

News reports on television and in newspapers are frequently accompanied by photographs or other visual images. While some people believe that these pictures are more effective than written information, I believe that although images can communicate certain events more quickly and powerfully, words are generally more effective for providing a complete understanding of a news story.

One significant advantage of pictures is that they can convey information almost instantly and create a strong emotional impact. Unlike written descriptions, which require readers to process and interpret information, a photograph can immediately demonstrate the nature and scale of an event. This is particularly effective when reporting natural disasters, accidents or humanitarian crises. For example, an image of a town severely damaged by a flood can instantly show the extent of the destruction and the difficulties faced by local residents. Consequently, pictures can capture people’s attention and help them understand the basic facts of an event within seconds.

However, written reports are more effective when a story involves complex information, explanations or different perspectives. A photograph can show what an event looks like, but it cannot usually explain its causes, provide relevant statistics or describe what may happen afterwards. For instance, a picture of a crowded hospital may demonstrate that the healthcare system is under pressure, but a detailed article can explain the reasons for the overcrowding, the number of patients affected and the measures being taken to address the situation. Moreover, relying solely on photographs can sometimes lead to misunderstandings because viewers may interpret the same image differently without sufficient context.

In conclusion, pictures are highly effective for attracting attention and communicating the immediate impact of an event, particularly when its visual aspects are important. Nevertheless, I believe that words are more effective overall because they provide the detailed context and explanation necessary for readers to develop a comprehensive understanding of a news story.

Overall8.5

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 8.5

Your response fully and thoroughly addresses all parts of the prompt by carefully considering both sides of the argument and establishing a very clear, well-supported personal position throughout. In the body paragraphs, you explore the emotional and immediate power of photographs when reporting natural disasters or crises, while also explaining why written reports are superior for conveying complex causes, statistics, and broader context. Your ideas are thoroughly developed and logically extended with relevant examples, such as the town damaged by a flood and the crowded hospital. To reach the absolute highest level, your arguments could incorporate even greater nuance regarding modern digital media trends, but your current development demonstrates a high level of task fulfillment.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 8.5

Your essay exhibits exceptional logical organization and progression throughout. Each paragraph has a clear central topic, starting with a nuanced introduction, moving to the advantages of pictures, then the advantages of words, and finishing with a balanced conclusion. Cohesive devices are managed with great skill and remain unobtrusive, as seen in transitions like 'One significant advantage', 'Unlike written descriptions', 'However', and 'Moreover'. Paragraphing is used logically and appropriately to separate distinct strands of your argument. To achieve an even higher score, you could employ more sophisticated, implicit referencing across paragraph boundaries, though your current structural management is already extremely polished and easy to follow.

Lexical Resource: Band 8.0

You demonstrate a wide, fluent, and flexible range of vocabulary, making skillful use of less common items such as 'humanitarian crises', 'extent of the destruction', 'comprehensive understanding', and 'relying solely on'. Your word choice and collocations are generally very precise and natural, contributing significantly to the readability of the essay. There are only occasional minor limitations or standard collocations where a slightly more idiomatic choice could be used. To push further into the highest band, incorporate more sophisticated academic idioms or figurative language, but your current lexical control is impressive and entirely effective for communicating complex ideas.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 8.5

Your response displays a wide range of complex structures used with a high degree of flexibility and control. The majority of your sentences are completely error-free, featuring sophisticated subordinate clauses, participial phrases, and conditional ideas, such as 'While some people believe that these pictures are more effective...' and 'This is particularly effective when reporting natural disasters...'. Punctuation is handled accurately throughout, and grammar never impedes communication. To attain the top band, you would need to produce sustained error-free writing with absolute mastery over every single sentence structure, but your control here is already exceptionally strong and robust.
