Student answer (Band 5.5)

TV news channels use pictures in large amount in their news for making news more attractive, some belives that it is a good way of expressing news to the audience. I largely agree with the way of news channals showing their news but there could be some limitations.

Firstly, showing pictures in tv and in newspaper will definately help to grab some more audience. Some good photos will help to understand the news in more easy way. Additionally, it also helps to grab the attention of people who likes to watch news becuase sometimes news become borring for some person.

Moreover, digital news helps the audience to understand the impotance of situation. For instance, a while ago, terrorist attack happend in kashmir by the some terrorism group, everyone heard that news but when audience saw that news with some digital photos and animation than people will easily understand the seriousness of the situtaion. So showing some photos in news will helps the piblic in certain ways.

However, sometimes pictures can affect adversily. Some photos can create confusion about the news in the public, so it can beome little bit difficult for the public to understand the real news. Due to lack of creative teams of news cahnnels audience will suffer becuase news and photos are contraductucting each other.

To conclude, definetly photos plays a vital role in news but fewer times it can be reversly affected. So it all depend on the public how they react on the news and how they take news.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

The response addresses all parts of the task and presents a clear position regarding the effectiveness of pictures in news media. Relevant ideas are introduced, such as how visuals help grab audience attention and enhance the understanding of serious situations, like the mentioned terrorist attack in Kashmir. However, some ideas remain under-developed or lack full extension. For instance, the argument about how pictures can sometimes cause confusion is introduced in the fourth paragraph but is not supported with a clear, specific example, preventing the response from reaching a higher level. The main position is nevertheless sustained throughout the essay, fulfilling the core requirements of this level.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The essay maintains a coherent overall arrangement with a clear, recognisable framework including an introduction, body paragraphs, and a conclusion. Paragraphing is used appropriately to separate distinct points, such as the benefits of visual media versus the potential drawbacks. Cohesive devices are employed to signal transitions, using linking words like 'Firstly', 'Additionally', 'Moreover', and 'However'. Nonetheless, cohesion can occasionally feel mechanical or repetitive, and referencing is not always completely clear, such as the vague pronoun references in the concluding paragraph where phrases like 'it all depend on the public' lack precise antecedent clarity. Progression is generally apparent, but smoother transitions between sentences would enhance the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

The writer uses an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, attempting some less common and topic-specific items such as 'digital news', 'seriousness of the situation', and 'vital role'. However, there is a noticeable presence of spelling and word-choice errors that reflect a limited resource. Examples of spelling errors include 'channals', 'borring', 'happend', 'adversily', 'beome', 'cahnnels', 'contraductucting', and 'definetly'. Furthermore, there are awkward word choices and collocations, such as 'pictures in large amount' instead of 'a large amount of pictures' or 'fewer times it can be reversly affected' instead of 'conversely, it can sometimes have a negative effect'. These vocabulary issues remain frequent enough to constrain the precision of expression.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

The response displays a mix of simple and some complex sentence forms, demonstrating an attempt to use relative clauses and conditional structures. However, there is a limited range of error-free structures, and frequent grammatical inaccuracies occur across various categories. These include errors in articles ('the impotance of situation'), plurals and countable/uncountable nouns ('some person', 'photos plays'), prepositions ('react on the news'), and subject-verb agreement or tense consistency ('a terrorist attack happend... by the some terrorism group', 'everyone heard that news but when audience saw... than people will easily understand'). While these errors are noticeable and require some effort to decode, they rarely completely impede overall communication.
