Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.0
The response addresses the prompt only partially, discussing the general idea that pictures are effective in news and advertisements, but the position is not always clear throughout the essay. The ideas presented are somewhat limited and under-developed, relying on repetitive assertions rather than deeply explored arguments or fully realized examples. For instance, the mention of older people reading newspapers and telling their children or grandchildren is introduced without being clearly tied back to how pictures compare to words in effectiveness. To move to a higher level, the writer needs to present a well-developed, clear position from the beginning to the end, ensuring that every main point is thoroughly explained with relevant supporting details rather than left brief and generalized.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.0
There is some basic organization evident in the division of paragraphs, but the response lacks a clear overall progression. The movement from one idea to the next feels disjointed, and cohesive devices are frequently inadequate, inaccurate, or repetitive. For example, transitional phrases like 'on the other hands' and 'Now days' are used clumsily, and referencing pronouns such as 'these things' or 'they going to add into these all' create confusion regarding what is being referred to. Paragraphing is attempted, but internal logical links within paragraphs are weak. Achieving a better flow requires using a wider and more accurate range of cohesive markers, ensuring each sentence clearly connects to the previous one, and establishing a logical, stepwise development of ideas from introduction to conclusion.
Lexical Resource: Band 4.5
The vocabulary used is limited and minimally adequate for expressing basic thoughts about pictures and news. There are noticeable lexical errors and awkward word formations throughout the text, such as 'attrectiveness' instead of attractiveness, 'attrective' instead of attractive, and 'efficent' instead of efficient. Words are often chosen incorrectly for the context, such as using 'consious mind' or 'sales market belives'. These errors cause some difficulty for the reader and reflect a restricted control of word choice, spelling, and collocation. To improve in this area, the writer should focus on expanding their working vocabulary, learning the correct forms of related words (such as nouns, verbs, and adjectives), and paying closer attention to standard spelling and natural collocations.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5
The writer demonstrates a very limited range of sentence structures, relying primarily on basic patterns where attempts at complex sentences are frequently faulty. There are frequent grammatical errors that can cause difficulty for the reader, including problems with subject-verb agreement, verb tenses, and article usage. Examples include 'the newspapers and the news stories on TV is completed', 'People are loved to see pictures', and 'pictures are should be there'. Punctuation is also erratic, with run-on sentences lacking appropriate boundaries. To reach a higher standard, the writer needs to practice constructing accurate simple and complex sentences, monitor verb forms carefully, and reduce basic grammatical slips that obscure the intended meaning.
