Student answer (Band 5.5)

Nowadays, news stories on TV and in newspapers are very often accompanied by the photographs. Whereas, some people believe that, these pictures are more useful than words. However, there clould be so many reasons behind this, which will be discussed in the coming paragraphs and state my opinion at the end.

To begin with, the significant reason behind this trend is that it is more convenient way to elaborate the information by showing pictures in the newspapers. Moreover, people would find it easy and accessible way to learn about it. For example, according to the president of the Globe and mail in the year 2025, he said that approximately 80% of the people would like to read the newspaper through photographs.

Moreover, the second cause behind this trend is that it is more effective for disabeld children specifically vision impairment as they can not read it. But, showing them a picture is a useful way for them to learn from it and it is considered as an effective tool for them. To illustrate, my cousin has a vision problem and she would read the stories by means of pictures and she foud it relally helpful to her. Even, she would like to see the photos of news in the television as well.

In my opinion, it is better for to have some photos in the newspapers and television for everyone.

To conclude, news stories on TV and in the papers are very often accompanied by the pictures for better understanding and it has been playing an important role for the disabeld children.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 5.5

You address the topic and give reasons for using pictures, including accessibility and ease of understanding, with examples about newspaper readers and your cousin. However, the response only partly answers the central comparison: it does not explain clearly when or why pictures are more effective than words, and your own position appears only briefly in “it is better … to have some photos.” The claim about vision-impaired children is also unclear, since pictures are not generally accessible to people who cannot see; this weakens the relevance of the example. The supporting points remain limited and are not fully explained. State a clear opinion in the introduction, compare the strengths of images and written reporting, and develop each reason with a precise, relevant example.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 5.5

The response has a recognisable structure: an introduction, two body paragraphs, a short opinion paragraph and a conclusion. This gives the reader some organisation, and examples are placed alongside the points they are intended to support. However, progression is not consistently clear. The introduction promises that your opinion will be stated “at the end,” but the position is only briefly expressed before the conclusion, and the conclusion largely repeats the opening idea. Linking phrases such as “Moreover” are repeated, while “Whereas” and “But” do not connect ideas smoothly in their sentences. Some references, including “it” in “learn about it,” are also unclear. Use topic sentences that directly advance your argument and vary linking devices while making each connection explicit.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some topic-related vocabulary, including “accompanied,” “accessible,” “vision impairment” and “effective tool,” so the reader can follow the general subject. However, the range is limited and several phrases are unnatural or imprecise, such as “more convenient way to elaborate the information” and “read the newspaper through photographs.” Repetition of “pictures,” “effective” and “way” also restricts flexibility. Spelling errors such as “clould,” “disabeld,” “foud” and “relally” are noticeable, and “president of the Globe and mail” is not expressed clearly. Aim for accurate collocations and more precise terms, for example, “convey information,” “visual reporting” and “people with visual impairments.” Proofreading would help prevent spelling slips from distracting the reader.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.0

You attempt both simple and more complex sentence forms, including a relative clause in “my cousin has a vision problem and she would read the stories…” and a purpose phrase beginning “To illustrate.” However, complex structures are often faulty, and errors occur frequently enough to affect fluency. For example, “Whereas, some people believe that, these pictures…” uses punctuation and clause structure incorrectly; “it is more convenient way” is missing an article; and “it is better for to have” has an incomplete grammatical pattern. The sentence about disabled children also has unclear construction and agreement. Practise building accurate sentences with one main clause and a correctly attached subordinate clause, and check articles, verb forms and punctuation before submitting.
