Student answer (Band 6.0)
News stories on broadcast and print media is usually joined with Images. People are of the opinion that these images are more impactful than words. I strongly agree with these sentiments because using pictures promotes entertainment, it provides visual evidence and to create emotional awareness.
Firstly, attaching illustrations on the screen and books make it attractive for the veiwers,I mean seeing differents colours, shapes, forms and people encourage people to pay attention and to watch the show or program that is being shown. For example, Youtubers like Miss Rachel whose prime audience are the kiddies (little children) uses striking colours and visuals to draw in her core audience. She knowns that if she does not do this they will find her show boring and also magazine editors will try to include drawings and images in newspapers to make it engaging to the readers.
Secondly, visuals can be used to help people understand the sufferings or experiences of others. With the use of these tools Tv producers are able to communicate efficiently the woes and plights of others,so that it can evoke sympathy. For illustration, with the use of communicative channels such as documentaries we can see what countries like Palestine, Congo, Sudan and even Nigeria are going through on a daily basis. Seeing children being killed educates the world on what is occuring. With the use of these visuals it helps to show an event actually happened
In conclusion, I strongly agree that pictures play an important role in television news reports and in newspapers because they make information more engaging, support written content with visual evidence, and help create emotional connections with the audience.
Therefore, pictures are essential for communicating news effectively.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5
Your position is clear from the introduction and conclusion: you strongly agree that pictures are more effective, and you give relevant reasons about attracting attention, providing evidence and creating sympathy. The examples of children’s programming and news from conflict-affected countries help connect your ideas to the topic. This meets the task well, but the reasons are not developed equally: the first paragraph focuses mainly on entertainment, while the claim that images provide evidence is only briefly stated at the end of the second body paragraph. Explain more directly how pictures communicate information that words alone may not convey, and qualify broad claims such as “Seeing children being killed educates the world.” This would make the support more fully developed and precise.
Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0
The response has a clear overall structure, with an introduction, two body paragraphs signalled by “Firstly” and “Secondly,” and a conclusion that restates your position. The ideas generally progress from attracting viewers to communicating suffering. However, some connections are mechanical or unclear. In the first body paragraph, the sentence beginning “For example” moves from a children’s presenter to magazine editors without a clear transition. In the second, “With the use of these visuals it helps to show an event actually happened” has an unclear reference and does not connect smoothly to the preceding example. Use more precise links between each example and its main point, and ensure each paragraph develops one central reason in a logical sequence.
Lexical Resource: Band 6.0
You use an adequate range of topic-related vocabulary, including “visual evidence,” “evoke sympathy,” “plights,” and “emotional connections.” These choices show attempts to express ideas beyond basic vocabulary, although some are inaccurate or unnatural in context. For example, “joined with Images” and “more impactful” are less natural ways to describe news pictures, while “communicative channels” is vague for documentaries. There are also spelling errors such as “veiwers,” “differents,” and “occurring” written as “occuring.” These do not prevent understanding, but they reduce precision and control. Aim for natural collocations and check spelling carefully; for instance, use “accompanied by images” and “more influential” where appropriate.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5
You attempt both simple and complex sentence forms, including a reason clause with “because” and a purpose clause with “so that.” The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors occur in sentence structure, agreement and punctuation. For example, “News stories … is usually joined” has a plural subject with a singular verb, and “illustrations … make it attractive” has a mismatch between plural illustrations and “it.” In “With the use of these visuals it helps,” the opening phrase creates a faulty construction; write “These visuals help…” instead. Several sentences also run together, particularly the long sentence about colours and viewers. Review subject–verb agreement, sentence boundaries and comma use, while continuing to practise varied complex structures.
