Student answer (Band 6.0)

Nowadays, pictures are often attached to news when displayed on TV or posted on newspapers. Some people think that these pictures are inviting and hold more value than words. From my perspective, although pictures are effective, a written explanation is necessary to know the whole story.

For those who believe that the images posted are highly effective because they grab the instant attention from the audience. By displaying virtuals from the incident sites, the media can easily shift the focus of the public from one topic to another. As these pictures can directly impact the emotional behaviour in humans. People can get a first hand insight about the damages shown in images. For instance, real photographs from the Nepal flood news has created a long lasting impact on the world's population to understand the pain of the locals who survived that disaster.

Simultaneously, images are a great way to disseminate the news. In several poor nations the public is illeterate and they can interpret the news by looking at the photos shown in the newspaper. By looking at the displayed images only individuals can obtain an excessive information unlike reading long paragraphs. Moreover, TV chanels present photos not only to keep the public engaged while they are delivering their information but also to give the real insights of the locations where incident occurred.

However, I believe learning about the writen text is equally important as studying an image. Written texts provide us about the information about activity which later becomes the news. If individuals only look at the ppictures without reading the given content then they will never be able to understand the whole situation.

In conclusion, pictures are posted along with the news to reach to wider audience. Despite only focusing on images, people should also read the written texts for understanding the situation in a better way.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear: pictures can attract attention and communicate impact, but written explanations are needed to understand the full story. You address both sides and support your points with relevant examples, including the Nepal floods and people who cannot read. This meets the task well. To make the response more fully developed, explain more precisely how images can mislead or omit context, and expand the point that written text provides information about the events behind a news story. The claim that people can obtain “excessive information” from images is unclear and weakens an otherwise relevant argument. Your conclusion restates your view, though it could draw the comparison together more decisively.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, two paragraphs on the value of images, a contrasting paragraph about written text, and a conclusion. The progression from benefits to your qualification is easy to follow. However, some links between sentences are mechanical or incomplete. For example, “As these pictures can directly impact the emotional behaviour in humans” is a fragment, while “Simultaneously” does not clearly show the relationship between the second paragraph and the first. The opening of the first body paragraph, “For those who believe…,” also lacks a complete main clause. Use cohesive devices to express the precise relationship between ideas, and connect each example directly to the point it supports. This would make the progression smoother and references clearer.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a reasonable range of topic vocabulary, including “instant attention,” “emotional behaviour,” “disseminate,” and “first hand insight.” These choices help communicate your ideas, and the meaning is generally understandable. However, several word choices and collocations are inaccurate or unnatural: “virtuals from the incident sites” appears to mean images or footage, “excessive information” does not fit the intended meaning, and “provide us about the information” is not idiomatic. Spelling errors such as “illeterate,” “chanels,” “writen,” and “ppictures” also reduce accuracy. Aim for precise, natural combinations and check spelling carefully; this will make your vocabulary more effective without requiring unnecessarily complex words.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex forms, including a concession in the introduction (“although pictures are effective…”) and a conditional sentence beginning “If individuals only look…”. Most ideas remain understandable, but some sentence structures are incomplete or awkward. “For those who believe that the images posted are highly effective because…” has no complete main clause, and “As these pictures can directly impact…” is also a fragment. There are also errors in articles, agreement, and sentence construction, as in “the Nepal flood news has created” and “where incident occurred.” Review clause completeness and article use, and check that each sentence has a clear subject and finite verb. More accurate control of these structures would strengthen the response.
