Student answer (Band 6.0)

Certain individuals believe that the news stories on TV and in newspaper which are accompained by pictures are more effective then those accompained by words only. I strongly agree with this view becuase the pictorial evidence of news stories makes them more effective and communicative.

Firstly, the picture accompained news stories on TV and in newpapers are attractive to eyes. When a picture is attached to a news story, it becomes more interesting for young generation as well as for adults. For instance, students are generally not interested in boring news stories but when a picture is added to news, students seem more interested to read or view these news stories.

Secondly, news stories accompained by pictures are more expressive becuase picures can provide better understanding of the situation and scenario of the news stories. However, when a news story without picture is uploaded, it becomes a little boring and difficult to understand the situation by just viewing the words.

Furthermore, by adding the pictures to news stories can also help to save time. As just by viewing the picture of news storie, one can have an idea what the news story is about, resulting in reduction of time required for understanding the news story.

In conclusion, I believe that the news stories accompained by pictures are more attractive and underastanble for people. On the other hand, the news stories without pictures becomes little boring and takes alot of time to understand the situation. In my opinion, it should be essential to add pictures in the news story to make it more attarctive to people.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.5

Your position is clear from the introduction: you strongly agree that pictures make news more effective. You give several relevant reasons—visual appeal, clearer understanding, and saving time—and the student-news example helps illustrate the first point. This addresses the task well. However, some support remains general: the claims that pictures make news “more expressive” and help people understand faster would be stronger with a specific example, such as a photograph showing the scale of a natural disaster. The response also focuses mainly on the benefits of pictures and does not explore when words might communicate detail more effectively. The clear stance and relevant ideas are strong, but fuller development and a little more qualification would make the argument more convincing.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.5

The response has a clear overall structure: an introduction, three reason-based paragraphs, and a conclusion that restates your position. Sequencing is easy to follow, and signposts such as “Firstly,” “Secondly,” and “Furthermore” make the progression explicit. The main limitation is that cohesion is somewhat mechanical because each point is introduced in the same way, and several sentences repeat the idea that picture-supported stories are more interesting or easier to understand. Some links between claims and explanations could also be clearer; for example, the paragraph about saving time would benefit from a specific illustration. The conclusion repeats earlier points rather than drawing them together. More varied transitions and clearer links between examples and claims would strengthen the flow.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.0

You use some relevant vocabulary for the topic, including “pictorial evidence,” “expressive,” and “reduction of time,” and your meaning is generally understandable. However, the range is limited and several words or phrases are repeated, especially “news stories,” “picture,” and “understand.” There are also noticeable spelling and word-choice errors, such as “accompained,” “newpapers,” “underastanble,” and “attarctive,” which reduce accuracy and polish. Some collocations are unnatural, including “attractive to eyes” and “picture accompanied news stories.” Aim to learn common combinations such as “visually appealing,” “accompanied by photographs,” and “convey information.” Greater accuracy and variety in these choices would make the argument more precise and natural.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses with “because,” “when,” and “resulting in,” and the overall meaning is usually clear. Some grammatical errors remain. For example, “the picture accompanied news stories … are attractive” has a number-agreement problem, while “by adding the pictures … can also help” lacks a clear grammatical subject. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in phrases such as “in newspaper” and “the news stories … becomes.” The sentence beginning “As just by viewing the picture” is not a complete, well-formed clause. These errors do not usually prevent understanding, but they limit control. Practise checking subject–verb agreement and making sure each sentence has a complete main clause.
