Student answer (Band 4.0)

News stories on TV and in newspapers becomes more prominent by pictures but some people think that these pictures are more effective than words. In my opinion picture create more prominence in news stories on TV and in newspaper but importance of word can't be neglected. Words make complete sense that what about the news. Pictures and words both are essential for presentation of newspaper. For example is there is new about a cricket match so, if pictures are also added then the presentation of newspaper become more attractive and without reading words peope can know what about the news is.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 3.0

You give a relevant opinion: pictures can make news more prominent and attractive, while words remain important. The cricket-match example also relates to the question. However, the response does not develop the comparison between pictures and words, explain when one is more effective, or provide enough supporting reasons. The final point about readers understanding the news without reading words is asserted rather than explained. The response is also substantially below the required 250 words: it contains 93 words, with 8 words copied from the prompt excluded. This leaves the task only minimally addressed. Develop a clear position and support it with several explained reasons and examples.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 4.5

The ideas follow a basic sequence: you introduce your view, state that words matter too, and give a cricket example. This gives the reader a simple line of thought, and the example is connected to the topic. However, the response is presented as one paragraph, so the main points are not separated or developed into a clear overall progression. Connections between ideas are also limited; for example, “but” is used to contrast pictures and words, but the relationship between their different roles is not explained. The phrase “For example” signals an illustration, though the sentence that follows is difficult to follow. Use separate paragraphs for your position, reasons and example, and link each point explicitly.

Lexical Resource: Band 4.5

You use some relevant vocabulary, including “prominent,” “essential,” “presentation,” and “attractive,” which helps communicate your general view. However, the range is narrow and several expressions are repeated or imprecise, particularly “pictures,” “words,” and “news stories.” Phrases such as “create more prominence” and “what about the news” are not natural ways to express your meaning, while “peope” contains a spelling error. These choices sometimes make the intended point less clear, even though the overall topic can be understood. Build a wider set of accurate terms for discussing news and visual communication, and check spelling and collocations when revising.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 4.5

You attempt both simple statements and a longer example sentence, and the main opinion is generally understandable. However, control of basic sentence forms is inconsistent. In “News stories … becomes,” the plural subject requires a plural verb; “picture create” also needs subject–verb agreement. The sentence beginning “For example is there is new…” has faulty clause structure, and “if pictures are also added then the presentation … become” contains errors in verb form and agreement. Articles and plurals are also inconsistent in “in newspaper” and “importance of word.” Most sentences rely on simple patterns, with limited accurate complex structure. Practise agreement, articles and conditional sentence forms, then proofread each sentence for a complete, correctly structured clause.
