Student answer (Band 6.0)

Some people claim that the presence of pictures in news stories on TV or newspapers are more effective than words, which could be right for differents reasons.

First, when we were in the schools and we had to read texts, often we feel bored quickly if there is no picture in the page, till we begin to think that the paragraphs won't end. On the other side, we enjoy spending time reading mangas or any book contain drawings and images, this let the words become livefull and the time spent in reading felt more joyfull.

Another reason that backup the claim of the effectiveness of pictures; a study shared in 2013 highlights the activity of our brain when reading two articles, one with pictures and the other without. The results were interesting, as it shows the part of the brain responsable of creativity consume more energy when seeing pictures, plus the body produce a hormone related to amusement more than the normal level, while when reading only the text; this hormone stay near the natural level.

In addition, with the social media we notice that we consume more visual content that for exemple reading an article, or a virtual book. This prove that people lean towards visuals because it catch their eyes, and each one can extract his own thoughts from it. Plus the main role of the picture which is the simplicity of the message transmission that humans prefer.

With all these reasons, it seems that due to human nature prefering eye catching moments, and the easiest way to get an information, make our brain react better to pictures with text rather than only words.

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

Your position is clear: you agree that pictures can be more effective, and you give several relevant reasons, including their ability to hold readers’ attention, support engagement, and communicate quickly. The examples about school reading and social-media habits help address the question, while the brain-study example attempts to add support. However, some points are asserted rather than fully explained. For instance, the study is described in broad terms without identifying its source or clarifying how its findings prove that pictures communicate news more effectively than words. The final paragraph restates your view but does not weigh the role of words or explain when text may be more useful. Develop and qualify these ideas to make the response more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The response has a clear overall structure: an opening position, three supporting paragraphs, and a concluding statement. Sequencing phrases such as “First,” “Another reason,” and “In addition” make the progression easy to follow. This organisation supports the reader, although the linking can feel mechanical because each paragraph begins with a similar signpost. Some connections and references are also unclear: “this” in “this let the words become…” has an uncertain reference, and the transition “On the other side” does not express the contrast as naturally as intended. The final sentence combines several ideas in a way that makes the relationship between human nature, information, and pictures difficult to follow. Use more precise referencing and connect each example explicitly to the main claim.

Lexical Resource: Band 5.5

You use a relevant range of vocabulary, including “effectiveness,” “creativity,” “visual content,” and “message transmission,” and the meaning is generally understandable. There are also attempts at less common expressions, such as “extract his own thoughts,” but some choices are inaccurate or unnatural and reduce precision. Examples include “backup the claim” for support the claim, “livefull” for lively, and “consume more visual content that for exemple reading,” where the comparison is not expressed clearly. Spelling and word-form errors such as “differents,” “responsable,” and “joyfull” are noticeable. Aim for accurate collocations and check spelling and word forms; this will make your ideas sound more natural without requiring more complicated vocabulary.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 5.5

You attempt a mix of simple and complex sentences, including clauses introduced by “when,” “because,” and “while,” so there is some structural variety. The main ideas remain understandable, but some grammatical errors affect accuracy. For example, “the presence of pictures … are” has a subject–verb agreement problem, and “the results … shows” also needs agreement. In “when reading only the text; this hormone stay,” the punctuation and verb form are incorrect. The final sentence, “due to human nature prefering … make our brain react,” has an unclear grammatical structure and agreement issue. Practise building complex sentences around a clear subject and main verb, and check agreement, articles, and punctuation when editing.
