Student answer (Band 6.0)

Dear Sir,

I hope you are doing well. I am writing this letter to request you to reschedule my working hours for 2 weeks. Recently I have seen an advertisement about health and safety training and I believe that this training can be helpful for my job. Could you please allow me to start working from 3.30 pm instead of 1.30 pm from next week?If you can approve this request, I would able to join this training program.

I would also like to check with you, does our company reimburse training fees? It would be very helpful, if they can help me in this matter. I am really interested to do this program because of recent accidents that happened in our company. Last week, two crew members were badly injured and since I have to lift a lot of heavy weight, this training will help me to improve my techniques for lifting. I am also willing to be part of health and safety comittee in the future so this training is necessary for me to do.

I kindly request you to approve my request and please let me know if company can reimburse this training fee.

Thanks

Kind regards,

Vaibhav

Task Achievement / Task Response: Band 6.0

You address the main points by describing a health and safety course, requesting a change to your working hours, asking about reimbursement, and explaining how the training relates to lifting heavy loads and possible committee work. The examples of recent workplace injuries make your reason relevant. However, the course itself is only briefly described, and the request for company support could be clearer: you ask about fees but do not specify the course cost or whether you need the company to pay it directly. Also, the opening “Dear Sir or Madam” was specified, while you use “Dear Sir.” Develop the course details and state precisely what support you are seeking to make the request more complete.

Coherence and Cohesion: Band 6.0

The letter has a coherent overall arrangement: you introduce the request, explain the training and company support you need, then give job-related reasons and close politely. Paragraphing helps distinguish the request from its justification. Some links between ideas are less smooth, however. The shift from asking about reimbursement to describing the accidents is abrupt, and “I would also like to check with you, does our company reimburse training fees?” combines an indirect introduction with a direct question. The final paragraph repeats the request to approve the schedule and reimburse the fee rather than adding a clear next step. Use a more consistent sequence—course details, specific support, then benefits—and avoid repeating the same request.

Lexical Resource: Band 6.0

Your vocabulary is adequate for the purpose and includes relevant terms such as “health and safety training,” “reimburse training fees,” “crew members,” and “lifting.” These choices make the workplace context clear, and the reader can understand your intended meaning. There are some imprecise or unnatural expressions, including “request you to reschedule my working hours,” “help me in this matter,” and “do this program.” The spelling “comittee” also needs correction. More precise collocations would make the letter sound more professional and help distinguish the course’s practical content from the support you are requesting. For example, refer to adjusting your shift and enrolling in or attending the course.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy: Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex forms, including conditional language in “If you can approve this request” and a reason clause explaining why the training matters. The message remains understandable, although some grammatical and punctuation errors occur. In “I would able to join,” the verb phrase needs “be”; “I am really interested to do” should use a gerund or an infinitive construction with “in”; and “does our company reimburse training fees?” needs indirect-question word order after “check with you.” There is also missing spacing after the question mark in “next week? If.” Aim to check verb patterns, indirect questions, and sentence punctuation while retaining your varied sentence forms.
