Student answer (Band 7.5)

Dear Sir,

I am writing to request your approval to attend the professional training course which would assist in improving my performance.

The course is titled "Advanced Excel" and will be conducted for two weeks and will begin from next week. It would cover modules such as data analysis and creating reports.

I would appreciate it if the company supports me by paying the fee and making some adjustments to my schedule by allowing me to leave work an hour early to attend the classes. I assure you that this would not create any inconvenience to the regular responsibilities that the company requires.

This course will be highly beneficial for both me and company. It will strengthen my project planning, collaboration and leadership skills. Moreover, I am willing to share aquired knowledge with my colleuges by creating small presentation to improve productivity within the organization.

Looking forward to positive responses.

Yours faithfully,

Navjot

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 8.0

The letter successfully addresses all three bullet points in the prompt. You clearly describe the 'Advanced Excel' course, explain the support required from the company (financial and scheduling), and articulate the benefits for your role. The tone is appropriate for a formal business request. The ideas are relevant and well-developed, ensuring the reader understands the purpose of the letter immediately. To reach a higher band, you could provide slightly more specific detail regarding the 'data analysis' modules to demonstrate a deeper engagement with the task requirements, but overall, the response is complete and purposeful.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs, and a formal closing. Each paragraph focuses on a specific aspect of the prompt, which helps the reader follow your argument easily. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover' and 'This course will be', which help link your ideas. However, the transition between the request for support and the benefits of the course could be smoother. The paragraphing is appropriate for a formal letter, and the progression of ideas is logical throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 7.0

You demonstrate a sufficient range of vocabulary to convey your message clearly. Phrases like 'professional training course', 'regular responsibilities', and 'productivity within the organization' are well-chosen and appropriate for the context. There are a few minor spelling errors, such as 'aquired' (acquired) and 'colleuges' (colleagues), which slightly detract from the professional tone. To improve, try to incorporate more precise collocations or slightly more sophisticated synonyms to elevate the register, as the current vocabulary is functional but somewhat standard.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.5

Your grammar is generally accurate, and you use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures effectively. For example, 'I would appreciate it if the company supports me by paying the fee...' is a well-constructed complex sentence. There are minor slips, such as 'both me and company' (should be 'both me and the company') and 'creating small presentation' (should be 'creating a small presentation'). These errors are infrequent and do not impede communication. You have good control over punctuation and sentence boundaries, which makes the text easy to read.
