Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I am writing a letter to show my interest in new course for the carer who are working in a health care sector. Moreover, this is specially helpful for them who are transferring their patients from bed to chair.

Firstly, I am keen to join this course as soon as possible because, it help me a lot in everyday life. The course is about 'moving and handling techniques' with care and safety which is beneficial as I am shifting my clients everyday for their daily activities.

Secondly, I am waiting for the approval and access from the company. I would like to request the company to provide support after doing research on that topic, for that I am attaching a folder with this mail please check once.

Lastly, As a carer we all employees need to do lots of bending in our work field, which harm our back. However, if we use this protocol in our daily life which will help us to work efficiently, with extra care and safety leads to good practice and patient care.

Thank you so much.

Yours Respectful,

Kaira Moss

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

The letter addresses all three bullet points: the course is described as 'moving and handling techniques', the company's help is requested via approval and funding, and the benefits for patient care and workplace safety are explained. However, the development of these points is somewhat limited. For example, the request for company support is vague, and the explanation of how the company can help could be more specific regarding costs or time off. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it occasionally slips into slightly informal phrasing. Overall, the response covers the requirements sufficiently to meet the criteria for a Band 6.0.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each focusing on a specific requirement of the prompt. The use of linking words such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' helps to guide the reader through the text. However, some transitions are slightly mechanical, and the flow between sentences within paragraphs could be smoother. For instance, the transition in the final paragraph regarding the 'protocol' is a bit abrupt. Despite these minor issues, the progression of ideas is clear, and the paragraphing is used appropriately to separate the different points requested in the task.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

The vocabulary is adequate for the task, allowing the student to communicate their needs clearly. There are some attempts at topic-specific vocabulary, such as 'moving and handling techniques' and 'health care sector'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'show my interest in new course' (missing article) and 'which harm our back' (should be 'harms'). The phrase 'Yours Respectful' is also an incorrect closing for a formal letter; 'Yours sincerely' would be the standard choice. The range is sufficient for the task but lacks the precision and flexibility required for higher bands.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

The student uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('in new course'), subject-verb agreement ('the carer who are'), and punctuation (the comma after 'because' is unnecessary). Some sentences are slightly awkward, such as 'which will help us to work efficiently, with extra care and safety leads to good practice'. These errors do not generally impede communication, but they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Greater attention to basic grammar rules and sentence construction would improve the accuracy significantly.
