Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear manager,
I am writing to inform you about the course we saw on television regardingadvertisment and technology which can be usefull for our department. I am asking permission to enrol myself into this course.
It would be good idea to take this course and learn more bout the AI and technology advancement in field of promoting product and services. It comes with a advance understanding of advertisment and which will be beneficial for our department at large scale.
However, I would be greatful if you could provide our department time and money to get part of course. The company only has to pay the expenses realted to course not to the other expenses like paid leaves and travel expenses. I am the head of my department will take care of my employess expenses.
This will help us to learn more about technology and AI in field of advertisment. I can ensure you that will provide best outcome after this course.
I would appreciate your quick response.
Yours faithfully

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
The response addresses all three bullet points of the prompt: describing the course, explaining the company's role, and justifying the course's utility. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the course is vague, referring only to 'advertisement and technology' without specific details. The explanation of how the company can help is also slightly confusing, as you mention being the head of the department and taking care of expenses, which contradicts the request for the company to provide money. To improve, ensure your ideas are more specific and logically consistent throughout the letter.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5
The letter follows a logical structure with a clear opening and closing. Paragraphing is used to separate the different requirements of the task. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and occasionally repetitive. For example, the transition between the request for funding and the explanation of your role as department head is abrupt and lacks a smooth logical flow. Using a wider variety of linking words (e.g., 'furthermore', 'consequently', 'in addition to this') would help improve the flow of your arguments and make the progression of ideas more natural.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.0
Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your message clearly. You use some relevant topic-specific terms like 'advertisement', 'technology', and 'AI'. However, there are several spelling errors (e.g., 'advertisment', 'usefull', 'greatful', 'realted') and some awkward collocations, such as 'at large scale' instead of 'on a large scale'. To reach a higher band, focus on accurate spelling and expanding your range of vocabulary to include more precise professional terminology, while ensuring that your word choices are consistently accurate in a formal context.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0
The response uses a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, particularly with articles ('the' course, 'a' advance understanding) and verb forms ('I am writing to inform you about the course we saw'). Some sentences are slightly disjointed, such as 'The company only has to pay the expenses realted to course not to the other expenses'. To improve, pay closer attention to subject-verb agreement and the correct use of articles. Proofreading for basic punctuation and sentence structure errors will help you achieve a higher score.
