Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear manager,

I have seen a advertisement recently on a training course which will be very helpful for me during the work in which i can advance to have better and faster results. The course is regarding advanced software testing.

I need some assistance from the company side to help me learn the advanced software in terms of providing me more knowledge and giving me extra access to some tools where i can upgrade my skills through the program. The current software that we are using is outdated and if we can have the new software it assists us in many ways and completes the work faster than now.

As of now with the software we are going for 7 to 10 days for a task to complete it, sometimes we are facing problems as it is too old and the servers are too slow and that is lagging the work. To my view i have seen the new software for a trial and the tasks are done very flawlessly as there are some inbuilt tools where we do not have to give every single input. Please look into this for a better and growth of the company as well for us.

Kind regards

Shiva

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the course, explaining the company's role, and detailing the benefits. However, the tone is somewhat informal for a letter to a manager, and the focus shifts significantly toward complaining about current software rather than focusing on the training course itself. To improve, ensure your ideas are more balanced. For instance, the description of the course is quite brief ('advanced software testing'), while the section on current software issues is disproportionately long. Developing the specific skills you hope to gain would strengthen the response.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter is logically organized into paragraphs, each addressing a specific part of the prompt. However, the use of cohesive devices is somewhat mechanical and repetitive. For example, the transition between paragraphs could be smoother, and the use of linking words is limited. Some sentences, such as 'As of now with the software we are going for 7 to 10 days', are slightly awkward, which affects the flow of information. Using a wider variety of transition signals like 'consequently', 'furthermore', or 'in addition' would help improve the overall coherence of your writing.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

Your vocabulary is generally adequate for the task, allowing you to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terminology like 'software testing' and 'servers'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'during the work in which i can advance' and 'to my view'. These minor errors do not impede communication, but they do limit the precision of your writing. To reach a higher band, try to incorporate more sophisticated vocabulary related to professional development and business efficiency.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are frequent grammatical errors, such as 'a advertisement' (should be 'an'), 'i' (should be capitalized 'I'), and 'for a better and growth' (should be 'for the betterment and growth'). Additionally, some sentence constructions are slightly clunky, such as 'the tasks are done very flawlessly'. While these errors rarely impede communication, they are frequent enough to prevent a higher score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and article usage will significantly improve your accuracy.
