Student answer (Band 6.5)
Dear Sir or Madam,
I am writing this letter to express my interest for a training course which is provided by an international company.
I am a full time employee of a restaurant. I am interested to join a food cookery short term program. By enrolling in this program, I can enhance my skills in cooking profession. It will also help to provide me higher position at work place. Moreover, I would like to request that kindly reduce the fees amount as it is higher than my expectations. It would be great if you allow me flexible study hours. Hence, I can manage study and work together.
There is no denying the fact that this training course can provide me hands on experience on new cooking technique. Additionally, I will get certificate of cookery program and can able to work with high standard restaurants.
I hope you would take my suggestion into your consideration and act accordingly.
Yours sincerely,
Arpan.

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5
You have addressed all three bullet points of the task: describing the course, explaining how the company can help, and stating the benefits. However, the development of these ideas is somewhat limited. For instance, the description of the course is quite vague, and the request for financial assistance is abrupt. To reach a higher band, you should provide more specific details about the course content and elaborate further on how the skills gained will specifically benefit your current restaurant operations. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though it could be more professional in its requests.
Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.0
The letter is organized into logical paragraphs, which helps the reader follow your points. You use some cohesive devices such as 'Moreover', 'Additionally', and 'Hence' to link your ideas. However, some transitions feel a bit mechanical, and the flow between sentences could be smoother. For example, the transition from discussing the course to asking for financial help is quite sudden. Improving the variety of linking words and ensuring that each paragraph has a clear topic sentence would enhance the overall flow and coherence of your writing.
Lexical Resource — Band 6.5
You have a sufficient range of vocabulary to communicate your ideas clearly. You use some relevant terms like 'full time employee', 'enrolling', and 'hands on experience'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'provide me higher position' (should be 'help me attain a higher position') and 'can able to work' (which is grammatically incorrect). To improve, try to use more precise professional vocabulary and ensure that your collocations are natural. Expanding your range of synonyms will also help you avoid repetitive phrasing.
Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.5
You demonstrate a mix of simple and complex sentence structures. While the meaning is generally clear, there are several grammatical errors that occur throughout the text. Examples include 'interest for a training course' (should be 'interest in'), 'provide me higher position' (missing article), and 'can able to work' (redundant modal usage). These errors do not significantly impede communication, but they do show a lack of control over more complex structures. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and the correct use of modal verbs will help improve your accuracy.
