Student answer (Band 6.5)

Dear Sir or Madam,

I hope you are doing well

I am writing this email to you to let to know about my future plan to do a training with an international company named YMCA which is a non profit organization, and provide free course throughout the year. Recently, I saw an advertisement of YMCA that they are going to start program about kids fine motor skill development. I found myself interested in this course.

I think this is a great opportunity for me to develop my skills as an early childcare educator assistant. This training course will help me plan activities for children related to fine motor skills which is essential for kids brain development. Furthermore, as I mentioned this is a free course, so I do not need to spent money for this training. YMCA also provide a certification for the course as well as accommodation for one month means for full course.

I hope you will allow me to do this training. Feel free if you need any other information regarding this.

your Faithfully,

Gurpreet Kaur

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 6.5

You have addressed all three bullet points in the prompt: describing the course, explaining how the company can help, and stating the benefits. However, the second bullet point regarding how the company can help is slightly underdeveloped. You mention that the course is free and includes accommodation, but you do not explicitly state what you need from your manager (e.g., time off, approval, or sponsorship for travel). To reach a higher band, ensure that your request to the manager is more specific and clearly linked to the company's support. The tone is generally appropriate for a formal letter, though the structure could be more refined.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 6.5

The letter follows a logical progression, moving from the introduction of the course to its benefits and finally the request. Paragraphing is present, though the indentation and spacing are somewhat inconsistent. You use some cohesive devices like 'Furthermore' and 'as I mentioned', which help link ideas. However, the flow between sentences is occasionally mechanical. To improve, try to vary your transition words and ensure that each paragraph has a clear, singular focus. The opening and closing salutations are correct, though the sign-off 'your Faithfully' contains a grammatical error ('yours' is required).

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary for the task, using terms like 'non-profit organization', 'fine motor skill development', and 'early childcare educator assistant'. However, there are some inaccuracies in word choice and collocation, such as 'do a training' (should be 'attend a training course') and 'provide free course' (should be 'provides a free course'). Additionally, there are minor errors in word form, such as 'kids brain development' (should be 'children's brain development'). Expanding your vocabulary to include more precise professional terminology would enhance your score.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 6.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, but there are frequent grammatical errors that occasionally distract the reader. Examples include 'let to know' (should be 'let you know'), 'I do not need to spent money' (should be 'spend'), and 'YMCA also provide' (should be 'provides'). Punctuation is also inconsistent, with some missing commas and run-on sentences. While these errors do not completely impede communication, they occur frequently enough to limit the score. Focusing on subject-verb agreement and correct verb forms after modal verbs will significantly improve your accuracy.
