Dear Sir or Madam,

Student answer (Band 7.0)

Dear Sir/Madam,

Good morning! I hope you are doing well. I am writing to request that you could reduce my working hours for the 'Wound Care Program' offered by the Niagara University. Firstly, I would like to mention some outlines for this program. It is part time study course, which I could complete while working with our organization. It's maximum length would be about 6 months.

Secondly, I would like you to fix my work schedule according to upcoming study schedule. It would be better if you could reduce my working hours on every Tuesday, as I will have to attend practical hours on that day. Instead of that, I could finish my work online if you could send me the link for online meeting.

Lastly, I strongly believe that this course would help me to expand my knowledge as well as sharpen my clinical skills as I am working as an RN at your company. Moreover, I would also be able to educate my colleagues regarding how to perform safe and qualitative wound care for the patients with severe wound injuries.

Thank you for your time and consideration and I am looking forward to hearing from you soon.

Yours sincerely,

ABC

Task Achievement / Task Response — Band 7.5

You have successfully addressed all three bullet points in the prompt. You described the 'Wound Care Program', explained how the company could assist by adjusting your schedule, and clearly articulated the professional benefits of the course. The tone is appropriate for a formal letter to a manager. To reach a higher band, ensure that the description of the course is slightly more detailed, perhaps by mentioning specific modules or the duration of the practical hours, which would further demonstrate your engagement with the task requirements. Overall, the purpose of the letter is clear and the response is well-focused.

Coherence and Cohesion — Band 7.5

The letter is logically organized with a clear introduction, body paragraphs for each requirement, and a professional closing. You use transition signals such as 'Firstly', 'Secondly', and 'Lastly' to guide the reader through your points. While these are effective, they are somewhat mechanical. To improve, try to vary your cohesive devices by using more sophisticated linking phrases or by relying on logical flow between sentences rather than just numbering your points. Paragraphing is used appropriately, and the progression of ideas is easy to follow throughout the text.

Lexical Resource — Band 6.5

You demonstrate an adequate range of vocabulary suitable for a professional context, such as 'organization', 'clinical skills', and 'consideration'. There are some minor inaccuracies, such as 'outlines for this program' (which should be 'details' or 'an overview') and 'qualitative wound care' (where 'quality' or 'high-standard' would be more natural). The vocabulary is sufficient to communicate your message clearly, but to achieve a higher score, you should aim for more precise collocations and a wider variety of topic-specific terminology related to professional development and nursing.

Grammatical Range and Accuracy — Band 7.0

You use a mix of simple and complex sentence structures, such as 'It is part time study course, which I could complete while working...'. There are some grammatical slips, such as 'It's maximum length' (should be 'Its') and 'the Niagara University' (the article is unnecessary here). Additionally, 'I am writing to request that you could reduce' is slightly awkward; 'I am writing to request a reduction in my working hours' would be more formal and accurate. Despite these errors, your meaning is always clear, and the grammar does not impede communication.
